Design, Development, Implementation, and On-Orbit Performance of the Dynamic Ionosphere CubeSat Experiment Mission

Funded by the NSF CubeSat and NASA ELaNa programs, the Dynamic Ionosphere CubeSat Experiment (DICE) mission consists of two 1.5U (1.5 Unit) CubeSats which were launched into an eccentric low Earth orbit on October 28, 2011. Each identical spacecraft carries two Langmuir probes to measure ionospheric in-situ plasma densities, electric field probes to measure in-situ DC and AC electric fields, and a science grade magnetometer to measure in-situ DC and AC magnetic fields. Given the tight integration of these multiple sensors with the CubeSat platforms, each of the DICE spacecraft is effectively a sensor-sat capable of comprehensive ionospheric diagnostics. The use of two identical sensor-sats at slightly different orbiting velocities in nearly identical orbits permits the deconvolution of spatial and temporal ambiguities in the observations of the ionosphere from a moving platform. In addition to demonstrating nanosat-based constellation science, the DICE mission is advancing a number of groundbreaking CubeSat technologies including miniaturized mechanisms and high-speed downlink communications.

Mark 4-A DSCC telemetry system description

The DSN is undertaking a major modification of the Mark 3. The modified network described is the Mark 4-A. The DSCC portion of the DSN telemetry system is changed in two major ways as a result of the Mark 4-A DSN implementation. Two 34 meter antennas are added to each deep space communications complex (DSCC). The arraying of those antennas with the existing 64 and 34 meter antennas will provide the equivalent of two separate 64 meter antennas or two 64 meter antennas arrayed together. To accomplish this, the DSCC is modified to provide baseband combining of three 34 meter antennas and one 64 meter antenna. The telemetry system is configured to support either two deep space missions and one highly elliptical orbiter or two highly elliptical orbiters and one deep space mission. Highly elliptical orbiter missions have data rates up to 202 ksps modulated directly on the carrier.

Mark 4-A DSCC telemetry system description

This system is designed as a replacement for the Mark III. Two major changes in the DSCC portion of the DSN Telemetry System are discussed: the addition of two 34 meter antennas to each DSCC; and the configuration of the telemetry system. The telemetry system is configured to support either two deep space missions and one highly elliptical orbit, or two highly elliptical orbits and one deep space mission.
