Mechanical testing of large cryogenic structures

The mechanical testing performed on the Cryogenic Limb Array Etalon Spectrometer (CLAES) instrument installed on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite is discussed. The CLAES determines temperatures and concentrations of stratospheric minor species as a function of altitude by measuring the atmospheric infrared emission spectra. CLAES is based on a telescope optical system and infrared spectrometer which are cooled with cryogens.

Cryogenic Limb Array Etalon Spectrometer (CLAES) - Instrument overview

The design and capabilities of CLAES are described. The CLAES is an instrument on NASA's Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) and measures the global concentrations of stratospheric species and temperature over the altitude range 10-60 km. Consideration is given to the motorized limb acquisition and adjustment mirror, solid cryogen cooler, optical system, electronics subsystems, cryostat, and IR calibration source. Diagrams of the CLAES and UARS are provided.
