Enhancements supporting IC usage of PEM libraries on next-gen platforms

This milestone reports on the culmination of several years of effort by multiple PEM support software development teams to provide capabilities for use in LLNL-developed integrated codes on next-gen ASC platforms, including GPU support. We will provide a survey of relevant Application Program Interfaces (API) that are required to support LLNL IC code capability on relevant architectures, with a focus on Sierra and El Capitan. We will identify and summarize all dependencies between PEM supported libraries and IC supported physics codes. We will provide an assessment of algorithmic improvements that have been deployed, as well as future developments that are required to complete the GPU porting efforts. This assessment will include a description of programming models adopted by each of the PEM projects, distinct algorithmic challenges for each of the capabilities, and information about sharing GPU memory between the APIs and host codes. We will develop targeted test problems to assess computational performance. Finally, this milestone will result in identification of gaps in our effort to assist the LLNL ASC program in prioritization of effort for porting software to El Capitan.

An evaluation of the CORAL interconnects

The US Department of Energy deployed the Summit and Sierra supercomputers with the latest state-of-the-art network interconnect technology in 2018 and both systems entered production in 2019. In this paper, we provide an in-depth assessment of the systems' network interconnects that are based on Enhanced Data Rate (EDR) 100 Gb/s Mellanox InfiniBand. Both systems use second-generation EDR Host Channel Adapters (HCAs) and switches with several new features such as Adaptive Routing (AR), switch-based collectives, and HCA-based tag matching. Although based on the same components, Summit's network is "non-blocking" (i.e., a fully provisioned Clos network) and Sierra's network has a 2:1 taper between the racks and aggregation switches. We evaluate the two systems' interconnects using traditional communication benchmarks as well as production applications. We find that the new Adaptive Routing dramatically improves performance but the other new features still need improvement.

Comb

Comb is a communication performance benchmarking tool. It is used to determine performance tradeoffs in implementing communication patterns on high performance computing (HPC) platforms. At its core comb runs combinations of communication patterns with execution patterns, and memory spaces. The current set of capabilities Comb provides includes: o Configurable structured mesh halo exchange communication. o A variety of communication patterns based on grouping messages. o A variety of execution patterns including serial, openmp threading, cuda, cuda batched kernels, and cuda persistent kernels. o A variety of memory spaces including default system allocated memory, pinned host memory, cuda device memory, and cuda managed memory with different cuda memory advice.
