Experimental Determination of the QCD Effective Charge α g1 ( Q )

The QCD effective charge α g1 (Q) is an observable that characterizes the magnitude of the strong interaction. At high momentum Q, it coincides with the QCD running coupling α s (Q). At low Q, it offers a nonperturbative definition of the running coupling. We have extracted α g1 (Q) from measurements carried out at Jefferson Lab that span the very low to moderately high Q domain, 0.14 ≤ Q ≤ 2.18 GeV. The precision of the new results is much improved over the previous extractions and the reach in Q at the lower end is significantly expanded. The data show that α g1 (Q) becomes Q-independent at very low Q. They compare well with two recent predictions of the QCD effective charge based on Dyson–Schwinger equations and on the AdS/CFT duality.

N* Experiments and what they tell us about Strong QCD Physics

I give an overview on experimental studies of the spectrum and the structure of the excited states of the nucleon and what we can learn about their internal structure. One focus is on the efforts to obtain a more complete picture of the light-quark baryon excitation spectrum employing electromagnetic beams that will allow us to draw some conclusions on the symmetries underlying the spectrum. For the higher mass excitations, the full employment of coupled channel approaches is essential when searching for new excited states in the large amounts of data already accumulated in different channels involving a variety of polarization observables. The other focus is on the study of transition form factors and helicity amplitudes and their dependences on Q2, especially on some of the more prominent resonances, especially D(1232), N(1440), and negative parity states N(1535), and N (1675). These were obtained in pion and eta electroproduction experiments off proton targets and have already led to further insights in the active degrees-of-freedom as a function of the distance scale involved.

N* Experiments and their Impact on strong QCD

Strong QCD is our theoretical tool to come to a full understanding of the physics of confinement, dynamical mass creation, and the breaking of chiral symmetry. With the right experimental and theoretical tools, the study of the structure of the nucleon and its energy spectrum can provide a tremendous amount of knowledge of the degrees of freedom underlying the excitation of nucleons.

Neutron helicity amplitudes

Here we determine the helicity amplitudes for the photoproduction of nucleon resonances excited from neutrons in the Bonn-Gatchina coupled-channel partial wave analysis. The upper limits for the decay fraction of the pentaquark candidate N(1685) → K 0 Λ are given. The electric and magnetic couplings at the pole positions are also tabulated, and these are used to suggest candidates for possible multiplets with quark-spin-1/2 and -3/2 content.

Pre-Town Meeting on spin physics at an Electron-Ion Collider

A polarized ep/eA collider (Electron-Ion Collider, or EIC), with polarized proton and light-ion beams and unpolarized heavy-ion beams with a variable center-of-mass energy √s ~ 20 to ~ 100 GeV (upgradable to ~ 150 GeV) and a luminosity up to ~10 34 cm -2 s -1 , would be uniquely suited to address several outstanding questions of Quantum Chromodynamics, and thereby lead to new qualitative and quantitative information on the microscopic structure of hadrons and nuclei. During this meeting at Jefferson Lab we addressed recent theoretical and experimental developments in the spin and the three-dimensional structure of the nucleon (sea quark and gluon spatial distributions, orbital motion, polarization, and their correlations). Finally, this mini-paper contains a short update on progress in these areas since the EIC White paper (A. Accardi et al., Eur. Phys. J. A 52, 268 (2016)).

12 GeV CEBAF - The Physics and Experiments

In this talk the role of spin and polarization is discussed in experimental search for new excited baryon states and in the study of the internal quark-gluon structure of the proton and neutron. Also the perspective of spin physics at the 12 GeV CEBAF electron accelerator is discussed and what we hope to learn about fundamental properties of hadrons such as their multi-dimensional structure through the momentum and spatial imaging, and about the forces on the quarks in the proton and how quark confinement may be realized through the spatial distribution of such forces.
