The JPL Resource Allocation Planning and Scheduling Office (RAPSO) process

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Resource Allocation Planning and Scheduling Office is chartered to divide the limited amount of tracking hours of the Deep Space Network amongst the various missions in as equitable allotment as can be achieved. To best deal with this division of assets and time, an interactive process has evolved that promotes discussion with agreement by consensus between all of the customers that use the Deep Space Network (DSN). Aided by a suite of tools, the task of division of asset time is then performed in three stages of granularity. Using this approach, DSN loads are either forecasted or scheduled throughout a moving 10-year window.

A summary of space flight missions supported by the Deep Space Network

Since the Ranger series in the 1960s the DSN evolved to a highly sophisticated telecommunications and data acquisition network. The 26 meter antennas were converted to 34 meters, and 64 meter antennas were built at all complexes. The L-band systems were changed to S-band, with X-band now also being used on Voyager and Pioneer 12. Ranging systems were developed and are used along with other techniques to determine exact spacecraft locations. Each mission is summarized and the launch date, objective, and results are presented.

Helios mission support

Activities of the Deep Space Network in support of the Helios project from 15 April through 15 June 1977 are reported. Information concerning Helios-2's superior conjunction period, Faraday rotation experimentation during solar conjunction, updated Mark III data system status, and other mission oriented activities is included.

Helios mission support

Deep Space Network coverage of Helios-1 and Helios-2 from Feb. 1 through Apr. 15, 1977 is presented in tabular form. Mark III data system (MDS) performance and station modifications for MDS configuration are discussed. Cross support for Helios operations by DSN and STDN is described and their downlink performances compared.

Helios mission support

The Helios-1 third solar occultation and fourth perihelion is covered. A Helios-2 spacecraft emergency and third solar conjunction (occultation) are also discussed. Additional topics include STDN-DSN telemetry and command cross-support, Ground Data System tests, tracking coverage, plus DSN system performance for August and September 1976.
