Laser radar for spacecraft guidance applications

A flight qualified laser radar called LAMP (LAser MaPper) is under development at JPL. LAMP is a guidance and control sensor that can form 3 dimensional images of its field of regard. This paper describes the detailed design of the LAMP sensor.

Sensitized Liquid Hydrazine Detonation Studies

Vapor-phase hydrazine (N2H4) is known to be very sensitive to detonation while liquid hydrazine is very insensitive to detonation, theoretically requiring extremely high pressures to induce initiation. A review of literature on solid and liquid explosives shows that when pure explosive substances are infiltrated with gas cavities, voids, and/or different phase contaminants, the energy or shock pressure necessary to induce detonation can decrease by an order of magnitude. Tests were conducted with liquid hydrazine in a modified card-gap configuration. Sensitization was attempted by bubbling helium gas through and/or suspending ceramic microspheres in the liquid. The hydrazine was subjected to the shock pressure from a 2 lb (0.9 kg) Composition C-4 explosive charge. The hydrazine was contained in a 4 in. (10.2 cm) diameter stainless steel cylinder with a 122 in(sup 3) (2 L) volume and sealed with a polyethylene cap. Blast pressures from the events were recorded by 63 high speed pressure transducers located on three radial legs extending from 4 to 115 ft (1.2 to 35.1 in) from ground zero. Comparison of the neat hydrazine and water baseline tests with the "sensitized" hydrazine tests indicates the liquid hydrazine did not detonate under these conditions.

Explosive decomposition of hydrazine by rapid compression of a gas volume

In the present investigation of the initiation mechanism and the explosion mode of hydrazine decomposition, a 20 cm-long column of liquid hydrazine was accelerated into a column of gaseous nitrogen, from which it was separated by a thin Teflon diaphragm, in a close-ended cylindrical chamber. Video data obtained reveal the formation of a froth generated by the acceleration of hydrazine into nitrogen at the liquid hydrazine-gaseous nitrogen interface. The explosive hydrazine decomposition had as its initiation mechanism the formation of a froth at a critical temperature; the explosion mode of hydrazine is a confined thermal runaway reaction.

Sensor Tracks the Sun From Any Angle

Sensor system locates Sun from any angle and generates error signals to point object toward Sun and follow its motion. Sun-sensor system includes three photodetectors, each with separate field of view defined by set of apertures. As equipment rotates about axis, detectors put out time-varying signals processed by external electronics to determine rotation rate and direction to Sun.

Development of a radiation-hard photomultiplier tube

In a radiation-hard photomultiplier tube (PMT) such as has been developed for stabilization of the Galileo spacecraft as it goes through the Jovian high energy radiation belts, the primary effects of high energy electron and proton radiation that must be resisted are the production of fluorescence and Cerenkov emission. The present PMT envelope is ceramic rather than glass, and employs a special, electron-focusing design which will collect, accelerate and amplify electrons only from desired photocathode areas. Tests in a Co-60 radiation facility have shown that the radiation-hard PMT produces less than 2.5 percent of the radiation noise of a standard PMT.

A sun acquisition sensor for spacecraft guidance and control

The combination of a strap-down analog sun acquisition sensor (AS) and an on-board digital programmable signal processor results in a versatile guidance and control system. The combination can orient the rotation axis of a spin-stabilized spacecraft to the sun no matter what the initial attitude of the spacecraft. During the sun orientation process, spacecraft spin rate can be sensed and supplied as an input to the control algorithm. If needed, the AS-signal processor combination can be used to perform a rhumb-line turn maneuver. In case of unexpected spacecraft operating conditions, or unplanned pointing directions, the signal processor program can be updated via earth-based transmission of another program to cover the new situation. Using only three radiation-hard cadmium-sulfide detectors, containing no moving parts, needing only a few microwatts of power, included in a volume of 550 cubic cm (a redundant pair), and weighing only 540 grams, the AS is a small, simple, sturdy sensing device.

A radiation-hardened star scanner for spacecraft guidance and control

A star scanner for the Galileo Project is described. Because it must function in the intense Jupiter radiation field, which consists primarily of high-energy electrons and protons, this star scanner is designed with radiation-hardness as a prime objective. The optics and the multiplier phototube are specially designed to minimize fluorescence and Cerenkov effects, and the electronic components to minimize ionization and displacement damage. The star-scanner layout provides maximum shielding for the optics and phototube. Test results predict successful operation in the expected Jovian radiation environment.
