From Earth to orbit

Within this document, the National Research Council (NRC) assesses the requirements, benefits, technological feasibility, and roles of Earth-to-orbit transportation options that could be developed in support of the national space program. Among the topics covered are launch vehicles and infrastructure, propulsion, and technology.

From Earth to Orbit: An assessment of transportation options

The report assesses the requirements, benefits, technological feasibility, and roles of Earth-to-Orbit transportation systems and options that could be developed in support of future national space programs. Transportation requirements, including those for Mission-to-Planet Earth, Space Station Freedom assembly and operation, human exploration of space, space science missions, and other major civil space missions are examined. These requirements are compared with existing, planned, and potential launch capabilities, including expendable launch vehicles (ELV's), the Space Shuttle, the National Launch System (NLS), and new launch options. In addition, the report examines propulsion systems in the context of various launch vehicles. These include the Advanced Solid Rocket Motor (ASRM), the Redesigned Solid Rocket Motor (RSRM), the Solid Rocket Motor Upgrade (SRMU), the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME), the Space Transportation Main Engine (STME), existing expendable launch vehicle engines, and liquid-oxygen/hydrocarbon engines. Consideration is given to systems that have been proposed to accomplish the national interests in relatively cost effective ways, with the recognition that safety and reliability contribute to cost-effectiveness. Related resources, including technology, propulsion test facilities, and manufacturing capabilities are also discussed.

Analysis of behavior of simply supported flat plates compressed beyond the buckling load into the plastic range

An analysis is presented of the postbuckling behavior of a simply supported square flat plate with straight edges compressed beyond the buckling load into the plastic range. The method of analysis involves the application of a variational principle of the deformation theory of plasticity in conjunction with computations carried out on a high-speed calculating machine. Numerical results are obtained for several plate proportions and for one material. The results indicate plate strengths greater than those that have been found experimentally on plates that do not satisfy straight-edge conditions. (author)

On traveling waves in beams

The basic equations of Timoshenko for the motion of vibrating nonuniform beams, which allow for effects of transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia, are presented in several forms, including one in which the equations are written in the directions of the characteristics. The propagation of discontinuities in moment and shear, as governed by these equations, is discussed. Numerical traveling-wave solutions are obtained for some elementary problems of finite uniform beams for which the propagation velocities of bending and shear discontinuities are taken to be equal. These solutions are compared with modal solutions of Timoshenko's equations and, in some cases, with exact closed solutions. (author)

Transverse vibrations of hollow thin-walled cylindrical beams

The variational principle, differential equations, and boundary conditions considered appropriate to the analysis of transverse vibrations of hollow thin-walled cylindrical beams are shown. General solutions for the modes and frequencies of cantilever and free-free cylindrical beams of arbitrary cross section but of uniform thickness are given. The combined influence of the secondary effects of transverse shear deformation, shear lag, and secondary effects of transverse shear deformation, shear lag, and longitudinal inertia is shown in the form of curves for cylinders of rectangular cross section and uniform thickness. The contribution of each of the secondary effects to the total reduction in the actual frequency is also indicated. (author)

Compressive buckling of flat rectangular plates supported by rigid posts

Results of a theoretical investigation of the compressive buckling of flat, rectangular, simply supported plates supported in the interior by equally spaced rows of rigid posts are presented. It is found that the plates buckle as if simply supported along all of the transverse lines or else all of the longitudinal lines passing through the rigid posts, the occurrence of the one buckling mode or the other depending on the number and spacing of the posts.

The buckling of a column on equally spaced deflectional and rotational springs

A solution is presented for the problem of the buckling of a column on equally spaced deflectional and rotational springs. Useful charts, which relate deflectional spring stiffness, rotational spring stiffness, and buckling load, are given for columns having two, three, four, and infinite number of spans.
