Dataset_for_Conserved_macromolecular_architecture_of_Poplar_secondary_cell_walls_revealed_by_ssNMR_and_atomistic_modeling

This dataset contains solid-state 13C NMR data and atomistic molecular dynamics simulation files supporting the study of nanoscale secondary cell wall architecture across 13 genetically diverse Populus trichocarpa genotypes grown under uniform greenhouse conditions in 13C-enriched CO2 atmospheres (~89% 13C enrichment). The dataset contains two collections of solid-state 13C NMR data. (1) 200 MHz data (Bruker Avance III HD, 4 mm HX probe, 10 kHz MAS): raw Bruker TopSpin experiment folders and DMFIT-exported ascii spectra for selective and non-selective 1D 13C-13C spin diffusion experiments (3000 ms mixing) used to quantify inter-polymer spatial proximities, and short-mixing (1 ms) reference spectra used for polymeric abundance quantification by spectral deconvolution. (2) 600 MHz data (Bruker Avance III, 1.6 mm PhoenixNMR HXY probe, 30 kHz MAS): raw Bruker TopSpin experiment folders containing 2D CORD, 2D CP-INADEQUATE, and 13C/1H relaxation (T1, T1rho) experiments for all 13 genotypes, with processed Excel workbooks per experiment type. Molecular dynamics simulation code, coordinate files, and analysis scripts (NAMD/CHARMM/Python) for six atomistic cell wall models are included. Summarized ssNMR data are compiled into a single excel file and subjected to statistical analysis. Multivariate analysis code (PCA, Pearson correlation) and summary data are provided as excel worksheets and Jupyter notebooks (Python 3).

A Novel Zwitterionic Chromatography Approach to Separate Lithium from Unconventional Resources

Lithium (Li) is a key element for clean energy technologies, and, accordingly, the global lithium demand has been increasing rapidly. Therefore, to meet the Li demand and maintain supply chain stability, it is critical to develop efficient lithium extraction technologies that allow exploitation of unconventional lithium resources, such as geothermal brines and inland brine streams. However, the recovery of Li from these resources is challenging due to low Li concentration, low ratios of Li/Na, Li/Mg, or Li/Ca, and complex feed compositions. To address this, we introduced a new Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) process using Zwitterionic Chromatography (ZIC) to separate Li from other salts. Since salts are partitioned on ZIC under water elution, no reagent chemicals are needed, and the Li separation is not limited by the adsorption capacity. We prepared 13 different zwitterionic (ZI) resins to investigate the salt retention on various ZI groups and then screened out promising sorbents for efficient Li separation. It was found that salt retention was synergistically affected by the pore size and ZI configurations. Using carboxybetaine (QAC3CA) sorbents, multicomponent separations showed that Li can be partitioned from divalent salts or Na with selectivities of 1.8 or 1.9, respectively. Although the selectivity is relatively low, in real brine tests, Li was separated from Ca and Mg with 79.2 % yield, showing the potential for a continuous process to achieve high productivity and high yield. Simulation studies suggest the salt elution mechanism is related to the hydration reaction energy and the effective hydrated radius of cations.

Investigating the Effect of Water on the Mechanical Properties of Cellulose from Multiscale Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations provide insight into the structure and physicochemical properties of materials with atomic resolution. However, the length and time scales accessible to atomistic MD are orders of magnitude smaller than many relevant processes such as the response of a bulk material to experimentally accessible strain rates, which presents challenges when comparing models to experimental measurements. Bottom-up coarse-graining provides a means for systematically mapping atomistic information to lower resolution models to increase the length and time scales achievable by simulation. Cellulose is an abundant carbohydrate biopolymer with applications to many fields of research, such as materials science and renewable energy, due to its desirable mechanical properties and viability for conversion into biofuel. The effect of moisture content on the Young's modulus of cellulose is of special interest due to its native environment often being in the hydrated secondary plant cell wall and the grinding energy requirements for biomass feedstock preprocessing. The current work investigates the effects of water solvent on the Young's modulus of cellulose calculated from coarse-grained MD mechanical stress simulations. The coarse-grained model was parametrized from atomistic MD calculations of cellulose-cellulose potentials of mean force using umbrella sampling techniques under vacuum and solvated conditions. The Young's moduli of the coarse-grained cellulose assemblies parametrized from cellulose in vacuum or solvated in water were computed via mechanical stress simulations to highlight the importance of capturing solvent interactions for modeling the mechanical behavior of cellulose.
