An Adaptive Critic Approach to Reference Model Adaptation

Neural networks have been successfully used for implementing control architectures for different applications. In this work, we examine a neural network augmented adaptive critic as a Level 2 intelligent controller for a C- 17 aircraft. This intelligent control architecture utilizes an adaptive critic to tune the parameters of a reference model, which is then used to define the angular rate command for a Level 1 intelligent controller. The present architecture is implemented on a high-fidelity non-linear model of a C-17 aircraft. The goal of this research is to improve the performance of the C-17 under degraded conditions such as control failures and battle damage. Pilot ratings using a motion based simulation facility are included in this paper. The benefits of using an adaptive critic are documented using time response comparisons for severe damage situations.

Arc tracking of cables for space applications

The main objective of this study is to develop a new test method that is suitable for the assessment of the resistance of aerospace cables to arc tracking for different specific environmental and network conditions of spacecrafts. This paper reports the purpose, test conditions, test specimen, test procedure, and test acceptance criteria of seven different (200-250 mm long) cables.

Waves in the magnetic field and solar wind flow outside the bow shock at comet P/Halley

The existence of hydromagnetic waves in the mass-loaded solar wind upstream from the bow shock of a comet is well-established both for comet Giacobini-Zinner and for comet Halley. Whereas previous reports have been concerned either with the magnetic field observations or with plasma observations, here observations of the magnetic field with the solar wind proton and alpha particle distributions are combined. This allows the three possible modes of propagation for these waves to be separated. The magnetic component is predominantly transverse to the magnetic field and linearly polarized. The flow vector also has a substantial amount of power parallel to the magnetic field. An examination of the pressure variations shows that slow magnetosonic waves are more common than the fast mode.

A fusion based plasma propulsion system

The Fusion Plasma Propulsion System scoping study was performed to investigate the possibilities of a fusion powered plasma propulsion system for space applications. Specifically, it was to be compared against existing electric propulsion concepts for a manned Mars mission. Design parameters consist of 1000 N thrust for 500 days, and the minimum mass possible. This investigation is briefly presented and conclusions drawn.
