Correlations of solar cycle 22 UV irradiance

The solar ultraviolet spectral irradiance monitor (SUSIM) onboard the upper atmosphere research satellite (UARS) is an absolutely calibrated UV spectrometer which has measured the solar spectral irradiance over the wavelengths 115 nm to 410 nm since October 1991. This data set now extends for about six years from near the peak of solar cycle 22, through its minimum, to the initial rise associated with solar cycle 23. Generally, the time series of UV spectral irradiances obtained shows behavior similar to that of other solar activity indices. The conditions on the sun, which can in result in dominant 13.5-day periodicity, are analyzed and illustrated. It is found that any combination of presence or absence of dominant 13.5-day in UV irradiance and solar wind velocity is possible depending entirely on the particular surface distribution and orientation of solar active regions.

Report from solar physics

A discussion of the nature of solar physics is followed by a brief review of recent advances in the field. These advances include: the first direct experimental confirmation of the central role played by thermonuclear processes in stars; the discovery that the 5-minute oscillations of the Sun are a global seismic phenomenon that can be used as a probe of the structure and dynamical behavior of the solar interior; the discovery that the solar magnetic field is subdivided into individual flux tubes with field strength exceeding 1000 gauss. Also covered was a science strategy for pure solar physics. Brief discussions are given of solar-terrestrial physics, solar/stellar relationships, and suggested space missions.

Lyman-alpha rocket spectra and models of the quiet and active solar chromosphere based on partial redistribution diagnostics

Absolute intensity Lyman-alpha profiles with a spatial resolution of 0.8 min and a spectral resolution of 50 mA were obtained for network and cell regions in the quiet sun, umbral and penumbral areas of a sunspot, two plages, and a quiescent prominence of the limb. Weak limb brightening shown by the Lyman-alpha cores and wings are consistent with predictions derived from partial redistribution line transfer calculations. Through use of a comoving two-level partial redistribution code which conserves mass flux, unequal red and blue Lyman-alpha peak intensities may be interpreted as flow velocities near 20,000 K. Outflows in the plages and downflows in the network are also noted. A model of a mean quiet sun chromosphere consistent with the Lyman-alpha integrated intensity, the Lyman continuum slope, and the millimeter continuum is presented.

Space application of SEC vidicons - The OSO 7 coronagraph.

An externally occulted Lyot coronagraph employing a digitized SEC vidicon detection system is a prime experiment aboard the NASA Orbiting Solar Observatory 7 (OSO 7). Continuing daily operation since the 29 September 1971 launch has produced more than 2200 pictures of the solar white light corona covering the region between 3 R and 10 R. Important advantages of the SEC vidicon in this application are its ability to integrate an electron image and store it for long periods prior to readout. Special applications of digital techniques are employed in stepping and pulsing the readout electron beam, thereby realizing the detector's inherent qualities of high resolution and large dynamic range.
