Collision integrals for isotopic hydrogen molecules.

The study was undertaken to determine the effects of reduced mass and differences in asymmetry on the collision integrals and thermal diffusion factors of isotopic hydrogen systems. Each system selected for study consisted of two diatoms, one in the j = 0 rotation state and the other in the j = 1 state. The molecules interacted with a Lennard-Jones type potential modified to include angular terms. A set of cross sections and collision integrals were obtained for each system.

Molecular dynamics - The dissociation of H2 by He.

The dissociation of molecular hydrogen by helium was studied at 5500 deg K using the quasiclassical approximation. The temperature-dependent reaction cross sections were very dependent on the initial quantum states of the molecule. A rate constant was estimated for the dissociation reaction, and agreement between theory and experiment was satisfactory.

Nuclear reactor descriptions for space power systems analysis

For the small, high performance reactors required for space electric applications, adequate neutronic analysis is of crucial importance, but in terms of computational time consumed, nuclear calculations probably yield the least amount of detail for mission analysis study. It has been found possible, after generation of only a few designs of a reactor family in elaborate thermomechanical and nuclear detail to use simple curve fitting techniques to assure desired neutronic performance while still performing the thermomechanical analysis in explicit detail. The resulting speed-up in computation time permits a broad detailed examination of constraints by the mission analyst.
