Ammonia is the fourth most abundant constituent in the atmosphere of Jupiter, after hydrogen, helium and methane.
The analysis of the linestrengths of the infrared spectrum of methane (12 and 13) in the 3-5 mu m region has been revisited onthe basis of new measurements from Fourier transform spectra recorded at Kitt Peak under various optical densities.
To support atmospheric remote sensing applications, line positions, intensities, self- and nitrogen-broadened line widths and their temperature dependence and pressure-induced frequency shift at room temperature were measured up to J' and N' = 22 for the oxygen A-band at 13122 cm-1.

The calibration of high resolution infrared spectra is generally more precise than accurate even when they are recorded with Fourier interferometers. In order to improve the consistency of the spectral measurements, an IUPAC project has been undertaken. Its aim was to recommend a selection of spectral lines as wavenumber standards for absolute calibration in the infrared. This paper will report the final recommendations in the spectral range extending from about 4 to about 7000 cm(be).
We report H-alpha and continuum imaging of 12 galaxies in the Bootes void. The H-alpha emission in ten galaxies is due to star formation; one galaxy is probably a narrow emission line Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), and one a Seyfert 1. Star formation rates range from 3-55 solar mass/yr, with the most active galaxies producing stars at almost three times the rate found in normal field disk systems. Eleven galaxies have strong H-alpha emission in the nucleus. The morphology of several of the galaxies is disturbed. There are at least five spirals, three of which are probably one-armed spirals, and three edge-on disk systems. Three galaxies not identifiable as spirals have H-alpha emission from regions outside the nuclear point source. 1510+4727, which has the highest rate of star formation in our sample, does not have the strong far-infrared emission expected from a galaxy experiencing significant star formation. The galaxies are quite luminous M(sub B) = -21 to -23 mag), and are not the type predicted to be found in voids.
To support remote sensing of the outer planets, absorption spectra of H2O broadened by H2 were recorded at room temperature using two Fourier transform spectrometers. The data from 1300 to 4000 cm-1 were obtained at 0.012 cm-1 resolution with the McMath FTS located at Kitt Peak National Observatory/National Solar Observatory. The remainder of the spectral data from 55 to 320 cm-1 were taken at 0.0056 cm-1 with the Bruker FTS.
The hydrogen- and self-broadened line widths of 116 (sup 14)NH(sub 3) ground state transitions with J,K = 1,0 to 10,10 have been measured at 0.0006 cm(sup -1) resolution using a Bruker spectrometer between 40 to 210 cm(sup -1). These experimental widths have been reproduced to 2.4% and 11% respectively using an heuristically derived expression of the form....
Leveling measurements conducted in 1980-1981 by the National Geodetic Survey in the Socorro area of the Rio Grande rift are analyzed. Crustal uplift related to magma inflation in the midcrustal magma body is detected; an uplift of 0.18 cm/yr is measured for the time between 1951-1980. The survey data of 1911 and 1959 are compared to the present data and good correlation is observed. The systematic leveling errors including height-dependence and refraction errors are studied. The 30-km-wide subsidence in the area is examined. The spatial correlation between seismic activity, the Socorro magma body, and crustal deformation in Socorro is investigated. The crustal movement from magma reservior activities is modeled using the formulations of Dieterich and Decker (1975). The modeling of the deformation reveals that the movement in the Socorro area is associated with the 19-km deep Socorro magma body.
The baseband processor (BBP) development for the 30/20 GHz Satellite Communication System is described. The SS-TDMA concept for future satellite communications is reviewed, describing the overall system, the satellite payload, and the frequency plan. A brief general description of the BBP is given, and the proof-of-concept model of the BBP is summarized. Key technologies and custom LSI developed for the BBP are listed. Finally, key technology developments and test data are reported for the BBP.

The 3.5 micron region of methane was analyzed. The positions and strengths of approximately 9000 absorption lines in the region from 2400 to 3200 cm were measured. Spectra were obtained at a resolution of 0.1 cm using the Fourier transform spectrometer and at 0.02 cm resolution using the four passed grating spectrometer. The analysis of the 3.5 micron region required the use of spectra of CH4 in other regions, therefore the methane spectrum from 1200 to 4700 cm is indicated. The method used for the compilation of line lists is demonstrated.
The architecture and system design concepts for a commercial satellite communications system planned for the 1990's has been developed. The system provides data communications between the individual users via trunking and customer premise service terminals utilizing a central switching satellite operating in a time-division multiple-access mode. Baseband processing is employed to route and control traffic on an individual message basis while providing significant advantages in improved link margins and system flexibility. Key technology developments required to prove the flight readiness of the baseband processor design are being verified in the baseband processor proof-of-concept model described herein.
