Investigation of Possible Electromagnetic Disturbances caused by Spacecraft-Plasma Interactions at 4 Radii

The proposed Small Solar Probe mission features a close approach to the sun with a perihelion of 4 radii. Carbon molecules emitted from the spacecraft's heat shield will become ionized by electron impact and photoionization. The newly created ions and electrons may generate electromagnetic and electrostatic plasma waves which are possible sources of interference with in-situ plasma measurements.

On the stability of nongyrotropic ion populations - A first (analytic and simulation) assessment

The wave and dispersion equations for perturbations propagating parallel to an ambient magnetic field in magnetoplasmas with nongyrotropic ion populations show, in general, the occurrence of coupling between the parallel (left- and right-hand circularly polarized electromagnetic and longitudinal electrostatic) eigenmodes of the associated gyrotropic medium. These interactions provide a means to driving linearly one mode with free-energy sources of other modes in homogeneous media. Different types of nongyrotropy bring about distinct classes of coupling. The stability of a hydrogen magnetoplasma with anisotropic, nongyrotropic protons that only couple the electromagnetic modes to each other is investigated analytically (via solution of the derived dispersion equation) and numerically (via simulation with a hybrid code). Nongyrotropy enhances growth and enlarges the unstable spectral range relative to the corresponding gyrotropic situation. The relevance of the properties of nongyrotropic populations to space plasma environments is also discussed.

Nongyrotropy as a source of instability and mode coupling

Nongyrotropic particle populations can bring about linear mode coupling in homogeneous media among the three eigen-modes of parallel propagation in gyrotropic magnetoplasmas. These interactions stimulate, in general, wave activity that does not occur in corresponding (random gyrophase) gyrotropic ambients. Solutions of the dispersion equation illustrate that simple introduction of gyrophase organization can (1) excite electrostatic (and electromagnetic) perturbations in media whose free energy sources are solely electromagnetic, and (3) drive hybrid (both electrostatic and electromagnetic) wave growth in thoroughly stable Maxwellian plasmas.

Unusual characteristics of electromagnetic waves excited by cometary newborn ions with large perpendicular energies

The characteristics of electromagnetic waves excited by cometary newborn ions with large perpendicular energies are examined using a model of solar wind permeated by dilute drifting ring distributions of electrons and oxygen ions with finite thermal spreads. The model has parameters compatible with the ICE observations at the Giacobini-Zinner comet. It is shown that cometary newborn ions with large perpendicular energies can excite a wave mode with rest frame frequencies in the order of the heavy ion cyclotron frequency, Omega(i), and unusual propagation characteristics at small obliquity angles. For parallel propagation, the mode is left-hand circularly polarized, might be unstable in a frequency range containing Omega(i), and moves in the direction of the newborn ion drift along the static magnetic field.

Approximations to the plasma dispersion function

Two simple approximations to the plasma dispersion function are analyzed and compared. One, is the resonance distribution approximation which is based on the utilization of resonance velocity distributions; the other, is the two-pole approximation proposed by Fried, Hedrick, and McCune (1968). The approximations are applied to Landau and whistler waves. Possible means of improving the two-pole approximation are discussed.

Whistler modulational instability.

Derivation of the modulational instability characteristics of whistlers in cold and hot plasmas. The cold-plasma analysis considers both ion motion and relativistic effects; the unstable band, with a growth rate proportional to (B/B sub zero)squared, is contiguous to Omega sub e/4 and, depending on the plasma density, lies above or below that frequency (Omega sub e is the electron cyclotron frequency of the static magnetic field; B and B sub zero are the whistler and static magnetic fields). In hot plasmas, stability occurs between Omega sub e/4 and Omega prime (less than Omega sub e), with Omega prime depending mainly on the mean energy and anisotropy of the energetic electron population; the complementary unstable band has a growth rate proportional to (B/B sub zero) to the 1/2 power. The relevance of the instability to whistlers in the magnetosphere is discussed.

Approximations to the plasma dispersion function

Linear wave propagation in hot collisionless plasmas is described by the linearized Vlasov and Maxwell equations. In uniform media, the utilization of spatial and temporal transforms of those equations leads to the consideration of integrals of the Hilbert transform type. Analysis and comparison of two simple approximations are provided based on the utilization of resonance velocity distributions. Application is then made to the Landau and whistler waves, along with a discussion of the results, and commentary on possible improvements.

Linear and nonlinear stability characteristics of whistlers

Linear and nonlinear propagating characteristics of right-hand polarized, slow electromagnetic, magnetoplasma waves (whistlers) are discussed in terms of stability and dispersion. An analysis of the stability of whistlers propagating at an angle to the static magnetic field is presented. A new mechanism is derived for the onset of stimulated emissions, and modulational instability for nonlinear whistlers are discussed.

On the stability of obliquely propagating whistlers.

By means of an energy conservation approach, this paper analyzes the growth rates of whistlers with arbitrary frequency and direction of propagation in a cold plasma permeated by a dilute energetic electron population. Numerical results are obtained for whistler frequencies and plasma characteristics prevailing at the onset of artificially stimulated emissions. It is found that the growth rates do not in general maximize for propagation along the static magnetic field, and a criterion for the existence of maximal growth at this direction is derived. An application to artificially stimulated emissions is discussed.

Whistler side-band growth due to nonlinear wave-particle interaction.

The distortion caused by a large-amplitude whistler (with wave normal parallel to the static magnetic field) on the energetic-electron velocity distribution of a predominantly cold magnetoplasma is derived analytically. Whistler test waves impressed on the perturbed magnetoplasma and within two narrow bands centered on the frequency of the original wave may experience large consecutive growth at the early stages of the wave-particle interaction if the unperturbed energetic-electron distribution satisfies two specified conditions. The relevance of these whistler side bands to magnetospheric phenomena is assessed; in particular, an identification of the onset of artificially stimulated emissions with the creation of whistler side bands gives good agreement with observations.

Sideband growth in nonlinear Landau wave-particle interaction.

The distortion of the electron velocity distribution caused by a large amplitude Landau wave is determined analytically for the initial-value problem. The resulting stability of electrostatic perturbations impressed on the evolving plasma is studied. Narrow sidebands of the applied frequency experience consecutive growths of large magnitude during the early stages of the nonlinear wave-particle interaction. The significance of the derived results to both wave propagation experiments and triggered VLF emissions in the magnetosphere is discussed.

Modulational instability of whistlers in cold plasmas

The paper obtains the modulational stability spectrum of whistlers in cold plasmas taking into consideration both ion motion and relativistic effects. The unstable band is contiguous to Omega sub e/4 and, depending on the plasma density, lies above or below that frequency Omega sub e is the electron cyclotron frequency of the static magnetic field. The relevance of the instability to whistlers in the magnetosphere is discussed.
