Amine functionalized supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) for CO 2 /N 2 separation

Supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs), containing aprotic N-heterocyclic anion ionic liquids (AHA ILs) in an inorganic inert support, exhibit CO 2 /N 2 permselectivity values as high as 640 at 35.0 °C and 0.03 bar CO 2 , which represents conditions similar to post-combustion carbon capture (PCCC) from a natural gas power plant. A Fickian model fit to the experimental data estimates CO 2 permeability at direct air capture (DAC) conditions of 10,400 barrer and a CO 2 /N 2 permselectivity of 4000 for the best performing IL, triethyl(octyl)phosphonium 4-bromopyrazolide ([P 2228 ][4-BrPyra]). The most important criterion for high selectivity is a large equilibrium constant for binding between the IL and CO 2 , which results in high CO 2 solubility. ILs with smaller molar volumes and with no fluoroalkyl chains enhance N 2 rejection. As a result, low viscosity and high IL molar density also enhance CO 2 /N 2 permselectivity and CO 2 permeance.

Quantification of zwitterion betaine in betaine bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and its influence on liquid–liquid equilibrium with water

In this study, ionic liquids (ILs) have been proposed as extractants for separation of metals, including rare earth elements. In particular, protonated betaine bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([HBet][TFSI]) exhibits liquid–liquid phase behavior with water that can be tuned by complexation with various metals. Here we show that previously undetected neutral zwitterionic betaine formed during the IL synthesis can affect the phase behaviour. Traditional synthesis of protonated betaine bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide results in significant amounts of neutral zwitterionic betaine impurity, which dramatically affects phase behavior.

Mitigating cerium migration for perfluorosulfonic acid membranes using organic ligands

Improving the electrochemical stability of proton exchange membranes is a pressing priority for heavy-duty fuel cell vehicles. The lifetime of the most widely used perfluorosulfonic acid membranes is limited by reactive free radicals generated inside the system. Cerium has been found to reduce the chemical degradation of the membranes. However, cerium migration during fuel cell operation limits the chemical durability enhancement effect expected from the radical scavenging activity of cerium. Here we investigate a wide range of organic immobilizers for cerium, measuring their suitability concerning cerium retention, radical scavenging activity, and fuel cell performance. Further, we report that partially fluorinated phosphonic acids enhance cerium retention up to 45 times and reduce fluoride emission rate by 38% compared to the commercial Nafion™ XL membrane pre-impregnated with cerium. The energetics of cerium-phosphonic acid complex systems by density functional theory calculations rationalizes effective cerium immobilization.

Rapid macrovoid characterization in membranes prepared via nonsolvent-induced phase separation: A comparison between 2D and 3D techniques

Optimizing the performance of asymmetric membranes prepared via nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) requires a quantitative understanding of how processing variables influence membrane morphology. Presently, the most useful structural quantification techniques require 3D visualization of the membrane structure and are best suited for studies seeking detailed information on small datasets. This study proposes and validates a rapid and accurate technique for quantifying macroporosity (i.e., D m ), a simple descriptor of sublayer macrovoid content in asymmetric membranes D m . values measured from segmented cross-sectional imaging performed via X-ray computed tomography (XCT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are presented and compared for three asymmetric membranes prepared from commercial polymers. Importantly, analyses of 3D XCT membrane reconstructions reveal that D m is described by a single, centralized mean, which demonstrates that macrovoid content is spatially homogenous. Thus, D m can be approximated from limited sampling of the 2D cross-sectional membrane structure via SEM. A proposed 2D SEM sampling method provides D m estimates within ±6% of corresponding 3D XCT values with 30 independent measurements for the three membranes. Further sensitivity is achieved using complementary descriptors such as macrovoid count density (i.e., C m ). This technique is thus a useful tool for characterizing macroporosity from a broad selection of membrane samples.

Preparation of defect-free asymmetric gas separation membranes with dihydrolevoglucosenone (Cyrene TM ) as a greener polar aprotic solvent

Nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) is widely used to prepare asymmetric gas separation membranes. Most industrial NIPS casting solution formulations are limited to a small group of glassy polymers and, importantly, require toxic polar aprotic solvents such as N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), or N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). Growing restrictions on the use of such solvents are spurring the search for more benign casting solution formulations that do not compromise membrane performance. Herein this study reports high-flux, defect-free asymmetric polysulfone (PSf) gas separation membranes prepared using dihydrolevoglucosenone (Cyrene TM ), a polar aprotic solvent that is believed to be safer than DMAc, DMF, and NMP, as the majority casting solution component. Optimized formulations and casting conditions produce membranes with hydrogen permeances exceeding 100 gas permeance units (GPU) and selectivities at or above those of dense PSf films. Dry/wet NIPS membrane performance improved with shorter dry step times and increased Cyrene TM loadings relative to the volatile solvent, tetrahydrofuran (THF), in the casting solution. The high water-Cyrene TM Flory-Huggins interaction parameter, $\mathcal{X}12$ , and high casting solution viscosities help suppress the formation of skin layer defects and sublayer macrovoids. In some cases, membrane selectivities were influenced by substructure resistance, providing insight into the relationship between sublayer morphology and membrane performance.
