Galactic absorption line coronae

Models are developed to determine if gaseous coronas around galaxies give rise to the absorption systems in quasar spectra. A two-dimensional hydrodynamic code with radiative cooling is used to study the dynamics and thermodynamics of a corona, and the position and rate at which clouds form. Coronal gas is found to rise from an extended gaseous disk in two models with base coronal temperatures of 10 to the 6th K and 0.50 x 10 to the 6th K. Column densities of 10 to the 19th sq cm out to a radius of 7 kcp are also achieved with a total gas mass of 2.0 x 10 to the 9th and 1.7 x 10 to the 9th solar masses, respectively. The velocity structure of the model absorption line systems may be reproduced, and clouds in pressure equilibrium with the hot coronas have densities consistent with basic observational and theoretical restrictions.

Detection of Lyman continuum absorption in the BL Lacertae object PKS 0735+178

The detection of the Lyman edge in the BL Lac object PKS 0735+178 at the absorption red shift determined by optical measurements leads to a lower limit for the column density of atomic hydrogen, N(H I) not less than 4(17)/sq cm. The Lyman-alpha absorption line appears to have been detected, but only an approximate upper limit can be obtained from the data, of the order of 2(19)/sq cm. This amount of atomic hydrogen is less than that for a line of sight through the disk of a normal spiral galaxy. It is suggested that the absorbing material exists either in the halo of a galaxy or in the tenuous, extended, gaseous disk of a galaxy.

Simultaneous observations of active galactic nuclei with IUE

The IUE observations of four active nuclei were coordinated with radio, infrared, and X-ray measurements to obtain simultaneous determinations of their continuous spectra. The results for the BL Lac objects 0735+178 and I Zw 187 indicate sufficient UV and X-ray fluxes to ionize any gas. Comparison of the X-ray measurements with the extrapolated optical UV continuum show a definite X-ray excess for I Zw 187 but none for the other BL Lac object.

The blue stars above the turn-off in M67 - Horizontal branch or blue stragglers.

The nature of the pseudohorizontal branch in the galactic cluster M67 is investigated. A differential technique is used to determine the masses of these stars relative both to the turnoff-point stars and to the zero-age main sequence. The results obtained suggest that the pseudohorizontal-branch stars are analogs of the blue stragglers found in other galactic clusters.
