Future interactive data systems

The information and control requirements of the investigator-users of future free-flying, platform-based, or Space Station-based scientific experiments are assessed, and the implications of these requirements for the design of the information systems are discussed. The principal requirements include near-real-time interaction with the payload, distributed or remote payload command and control, rapid access to quick-look data, flexibility of payload command sequences, on-demand uplink-downlink availability, system transparency, and modular design to facilitate replacement of system components. Current developments in systems architecture such as increased use of onboard microprocessors to select and preprocess data and transmit autonomous streams directly to the user, standardization of interfaces, and the NASA Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System are characterized, and block diagrams of present and future systems are provided.

Earth observation data systems in the 1980's

The requirements for future data systems for earth resource observation data are examined. Estimates are made for both expected data volumes and data delivery requirements. Research and development activities presently underway are described, including (1) high-speed processors such as the massively parallel processor; (2) data storage systems, including optical disk configurations and (3) distributed data systems such as high-speed local networks and the applications data service system.

The Massively Parallel Processor and its applications

A long-term experimental development program conducted at Goddard Space Flight Center to implement an ultrahigh-speed data processing system known as the Massively Parallel Processor (MPP) is described. The MPP is a single instruction multiple data stream computer designed to perform logical, integer, and floating point arithmetic operations on variable word length data. Information is presented on system architecture, the system configuration, the array unit architecture, individual processing units, and expected operating rates for several image processing applications (including the processing of Landsat data).

The Landsat-D Assessment System

The overall Landsat-D system is discussed with emphasis on the objectives, configuration, and capabilities of the Landsat-D Assessment System. This system is being developed to support investigations which demonstrate, evaluate, and assess the utility of Landsat-D data for a wide variety of earth observations applications.

Meteorological image processing applications

Meteorologists at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center are conducting an extensive program of research in weather and climate related phenomena. This paper focuses on meteorological image processing applications directed toward gaining a detailed understanding of severe weather phenomena. In addition, the paper discusses the ground data handling and image processing systems used at the Goddard Space Flight Center to support severe weather research activities and describes three specific meteorological studies which utilized these facilities.

AOIPS - An interactive image processing system

The Atmospheric and Oceanographic Information Processing System (AOIPS) was developed to help applications investigators perform required interactive image data analysis rapidly and to eliminate the inefficiencies and problems associated with batch operation. This paper describes the configuration and processing capabilities of AOIPS and presents unique subsystems for displaying, analyzing, storing, and manipulating digital image data. Applications of AOIPS to research investigations in meteorology and earth resources are featured.
