Thermographic Inspection of Aerospace Tankage

Thermography has been shown to be the ideal technical and economic inspection method for two applications - post-machining evaluations and for field inspections of damage and repair. For most manufacturing applications ultrasonic inspections are already available and established. There is no question about the detectability or cost when inspecting hardware out of the autoclave. But when the part is too large to bring to the scanning inspection system or you do not want to remove the hardware from its current setup then a more portable or field applicable inspection is required. This paper will describe two applications of thermography on composite inspections. The NASA NDE Team and Lockheed Martin conducted the work at NASA s George C. Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). The first application was inspecting machined hardware. The technique and example data will be presented along with the advantages of thermography. Examples of drilling holes and trimming the edges will be discussed. The second application will be the evaluation of damage in a composite part and the subsequent repair of the region will be presented. The technique, data, and benefits of this application will also be presented along with the follow-up inspection of the post- repaired hardware.

Reusable Cryogenic Tank VHM Using Fiber Optic Distributed Sensing Technology

The reusable oxygen and hydrogen tanks are key systems for both the X-33 (sub-scale, sub-orbital technology demonstrator) and the commercial Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV). The backbone of the X-33 Reusable Cryogenic Tank Vehicle Health Management (VHM) system lies in the optical network of distributed strain temperature and hydrogen sensors. This network of fiber sensors will create a global strain and temperature map for monitoring the health of the tank structure, cryogenic insulation, and Thermal Protection System. Lockheed Martin (Sanders and LMMSS) and NASA Langley have developed this sensor technology for the X-33 and have addressed several technical issues such as fiber bonding and laser performance in this harsh environment.

Ultrasonic-Transmission Testing Device

Ultrasonic-testing apparatus measures transmission through component under inspection. Includes hand-held ultrasonic transmitter placed on one side of component and ultrasonic receiver placed on other side. However, no need to hold or manually align receiving transducer after initial setup. Transmitter loosely inserted in magnetic assembly on one side, while receiver placed in another magnetic assembly on other side. Magnetic coupling keeps transmitter and receiver assemblies pressed against component and keeps receiver alligned with transmitter as transmitter scans across surface of component. Receiver moved to locations otherwise inaccessible.
