Pulsar observations and neutron star models

Information about the physical parameters of neutron stars is obtained from pulsar observations. The energy balance of the Crab Nebula and the Vela X remnant allows one to derive limits for the masses of the Crab and Vela pulsars. Glitch observations provide further clues on the masses of these two pulsars. The degree of confidence with which one should believe the derived numbers is pointed out. The possibility of observing neutron stars in binary systems as pulsating X-ray sources is discussed. Finally, the importance of observing redshifted gamma ray lines from the surface of neutron stars, and thus directly measuring either individual or statistical properties of these objects, is pointed out.

Hadron star models

The properties of fully relativistic rotating hadron star models are discussed using models based on recently developed equations of state. All of these stable neutron star models are bound with binding energies as high as about 25%. During hadron star formation, much of this energy will be released. The consequences, resulting from the release of this energy, are examined.

Rotating neutron star models and pulsars

Recently developed equations of state are used to construct fully relativistic models of rotating neutron stars. All of these stable neutron star models are bound. Consideration of binding energies suggests that very-low-mass neutron stars will not be formed in supernova explosions. Some criteria for equations of state are derived from a comparison with observations. Limits for the physical parameters of the Crab pulsar are obtained. In addition, we find that cosmic-ray protons cannot be produced by pulsars.

On the properties of matter in neutron stars

A qualitative description of the interior of a neutron star is presented, giving attention also to the validity of the 'isotropic fluid' approximation. The atmosphere and surface of a neutron star are considered together with aspects concerning nuclear and solid state physics in the crust, the liquid interior, the hyperon core, neutron star models, and pulsar observations. Accretion processes are also investigated, taking into account such topics as the Eddington limit, accretion rates, the death of pulsars, changes of the surface composition of neutron stars by accretion, questions of X-ray emission, and aspects of gamma radiation emission.

On the properties of matter in neutron stars

A review of recent development in the description of neutron star matter is presented, and its relevance to pulsar observations is discussed. This review is aimed at the astrophysicist.
