Exoplanet Standard Definitions and Evaluation Team
In the 2015 run-up to chartering of large mission studies, it became obvious that likely studies (HabEx, LUVOIR) would consider overlapping science cases (e.g. spectroscopy of exo-Earths). The exoplanet community has had some recent experience with apple-to-oranges/apples comparisons: parallel studies, different architectures (telescope, coronagraph masks, starshades). The challenge of parallel studies is to remain consistent over time. The topic was discussed by PAGs and Senior Management: request for “common yardstick, honest broker.” The Management Plan now includes an “Exoplanet Standard Definitions and Evaluation Team.”

Terrestrial Planet Finder Interferometer: Architecture, Mission Design and Technology Development
This overview paper is a progress report about the system design and technology development of two interferometer concepts studied for the Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF) project. The two concepts are a structurally-connected interferometer (SCI) intended to fulfill minimum TPF science goals and a formation-flying interferometer (FFI) intended to fulfill full science goals. Described are major trades, analyses, and technology experiments completed. Near term plans are also described. This paper covers progress since August 2003 and serves as an update to a paper presented at that month's SPIE conference, 'Techniques and Instrumentation for Detection of Exoplanets.
An Overview of the StarLight Mission
An overview of the Starlight Mission is presented. Mission summary: June 2006 launch to heliocentric orbit; Nominal 6 month mission with option of additional 6 month extension; Validate autonomous formation flying system: range control to 10 cm bearing, control to 4 arcmin; Demonstrate formation flying optical interferometry. The original 3 spacecraft design did not fit the budget. 2 spacecraft concept demonstrates all key areas of formation flying interferometry. Collector flown on the surface of a virtual paraboloid, with combiner at the focus. It Gives a baseline of 125 m with a fixed delay of only 14 m.
Stellar Interferometer Tracking experiment - A proposed technology demonstration experiment
A flight experiment entitled the Stellar Interferometer Tracking Experiment (SITE) is described. The objective of the program is to validate the operation of the primary detector of a space-based optical interferometric telescope and to evaluate how isolation, vibration suppression, and pathlength control enable and enhance instrument operation in the disturbance environment of the Shuttle payload bay. The minimum set of hardware that can perform stellar interferometry is described and the need for nanometer pathlength and arcsecond jitter control is shown. The justification for flight, the experimental benefits, and the applications to future space missions are presented. Results of previous ground experiments that demonstrate the required disturbance rejection are reviewed, and initial estimates of open-loop and required closed-loop performance of the flight experiment are presented.
