Fluorescent excitation of interstellar H2

The infrared emission spectrum of H2 excited by ultraviolet absorption, followed by fluorescence, was investigated using comprehensive models of interstellar clouds for computing the spectrum and to assess the effects on the intensity to various cloud properties, such as density, size, temperature, and the intensity of the UV radiation field. It is shown that the absolute H2 IR line intensities depend primarily on the density of the cloud and the strength of the incident UV radiation, and to a much lesser exent on the temperature of the gas, the total thickness of the cloud, and the optical properties of the grains. A variety of recent observational results are discussed with reference to theoretical models. It is shown that the rich H2 emission spectrum of the reflection nebula NGC 2023 can be reproduced by a model with density of about 10,000/cu cm, temperature of about 80 K, and UV flux approximately 300 times that of the Galactic background starlight.

Theoretical studies of diffuse cloud chemistry

Gas-phase chemistry in the steady state is reviewed. The chemistries of C and O, and the reactions for the formation of CO, D-bearing, and N-bearing molecules are discussed. Consideration is given to the column density of H3(+) in diffuse clouds, the rate coefficient, abundances of H3(+), and the steady-state models of van Dishoeck and Black (1986). The varying lifetime of H2, from 1000 years at the boundary to 5,000,000 years or more at the center of diffuse clouds, and changes in the H2/H abundance ratio in dense clouds are studied, and the nonequilibrium chemistry that occurs in shock-heated gas is analyzed. The estimation of photo rates and the radiation field; models of molecular formations on grains; and the synthesis of molecules in clouds are examined.

Heating and cooling of the interstellar gas

Basic considerations of the global heating and cooling of the interstellar gas are summarized. The various energy sources are reviewed. Expressions for the rates of a number of typical heating and cooling processes are given. General comments are made about the conditions in the several phases of the interstellar medium in thermal balance.

The abundance of interstellar CO

Data from recent observations of interstellar CO column densities are compiled in tables and graphs and compared with the predictions of theoretical models. The energy-level structure of CO and the excitation of interstellar CO are discussed; UV-absorption and IR line observations are characterized; and techniques used to estimate the CO column density from mm-wavelength observations (based on calibration of the CO line intensity with the column density of H2) are described in detail. Consideration is then given to CO chemistry under interstellar-cloud conditions (isotope fractionation and photodissociation) and models for diffuse, translucent, and dense clouds. A number of unsolved problems requiring additional observations or laboratory investigations are identified.
