Results from the crop identification technology assessment for remote sensing /CITARS/ project

The CITARS (Crop Identification Technology Assessment for Remote Sensing) task design, objectives, and results are reviewed along with relevant conclusions and recommendations. The principal assessment concern crop identification performance for corn and soybeans in six sites in Illinois and Indiana. Use of quantitative measures of classification performance and statistical evaluations of the results have been important parts of the technology assessment. Relation of crop and sensor characteristics is discussed. Factors affecting crop identification performance are identified as crop maturity and site characteristics, type of single-date automatic data processing procedure used for local recognition, nonlocal recognition with and without processing for extension of recognition signatures, and use of multidate or multitemporal data. In particular, the probability of correct classification of field center pixels is not well correlated and thus is not a reliable indicator of proportion estimation performance.

The results of an agricultural analysis of the ERTS-1 MSS data at the Johnson Space Center

The initial analysis of the ERTS-1 multispectral scanner (MSS) data at the Johnson Space Center (JSC), Houston, Texas is discussed. The primary data set utilized was the scene over Monterey Bay, California, on July 25, 1972, NASA ERTS ID No. 1002-18134. It was submitted to both computerized and image interpretative processing. An area in the San Joaquin Valley was submitted to an intensive evaluation of the ability of the data to (1) discriminate between crop types and (2) to provide a reasonably accurate area measurement of agricultural features of interest. The results indicate that the ERTS-1 MSS data is capable of providing the identifications and area extent of agricultural lands and field crop types.

Lunar mapping - A position evaluation.

Various types of available lunar charts were evaluated using the new data provided by Apollo missions. The position information provided by current lunar cartographic products is examined, and data are included which can be used to determine a realistic reliability factor for each chart series discussed. The use of Apollo landmark tracking points yields quantitative results concerning the position errors that can be expected from the specific products included in this evaluation.
