Quasielastic $\overrightarrow{^{3}He}$ $(\overrightarrow{e},e′)$ asymmetry in the threshold region with a longitudinally polarized target

We report on the measurements of the double-spin asymmetry from electron- 3 He scattering in the threshold region of two- and three-body breakup of 3 He for 4-momentum transfer values of 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/c) 2 . The measurement was done at Jefferson Lab using a polarized 3 He target with its spin aligned parallel to the beam direction. This asymmetry is sensitive to a combination of spin-dependent response functions not previously measured and may highlight differences in two body forces, meson-exchange currents and final-state interactions. The results of this measurement serve as a test of our understanding of few-body systems. When compared with calculations from plane wave impulse approximation and Faddeev calculations, we found that the latter, which use modern nuclear potentials and prescriptions for meson-exchange currents, demonstrate an overall good agreement with data.

Inclusive studies of two- and three-nucleon short-range correlations in 3 H and 3 He

Inclusive electron scattering at carefully chosen kinematics can isolate scattering from the high-momentum nucleons in short-range correlations (SRCs). SRCs are produced by the hard, short-distance interactions of nucleons in the nucleus, and because the two-nucleon (2N) SRCs arise from the same N-N interaction in all nuclei, the cross section in the SRC-dominated regime is identical up to an overall scaling factor. This scaling behavior has been used to identify SRC dominance and to measure the contribution of SRCs in a wide range of nuclei. We examine this scaling behavior over a range of momentum transfers using new data on 2 H, 3 H, and 3 He, and find an expanded scaling region compared to heavy nuclei. Motivated by this improved scaling, we examine the 3 H and 3 He data in kinematics where three-nucleon SRCs may play an important role. The data for the largest struck nucleon momenta are consistent with isolation of scattering from three-nucleon SRCs, and suggest that the very highest momentum nucleons in 3 He have a nearly isospin-independent momentum configuration.

Strong interaction physics at the luminosity frontier with 22 GeV electrons at Jefferson Lab

Here, the purpose of this document is to outline the developing scientific case for pursuing an energy upgrade to 22 GeV of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF, or JLab). This document was developed with input from a series of workshops held in the period between March 2022 and April 2023 that were organized by the JLab user community and staff with guidance from JLab management (see Sec. 10). The scientific case for the 22 GeV energy upgrade leverages existing or already planned Hall equipment and world-wide uniqueness of CEBAF high-luminosity operations.

Pion electroproduction measurements in the nucleon resonance region

Here, we report new pion electroproduction measurements in the $\Delta (1232)$ resonance, utilizing the SHMS - HMS magnetic spectrometers of Hall C at Jefferson Lab. The data focus on a region that exhibits a strong and rapidly changing interplay of the mesonic cloud and quark-gluon dynamics in the nucleon. The results are in reasonable agreement with models that employ pion cloud effects and chiral effective field theory calculations, but at the same time they suggest that an improvement is required to the theoretical calculations and provide valuable input that will allow their refinements. The data illustrate the potential of the magnetic spectrometers setup in Hall C towards the study the $\Delta (1232)$ resonance. These first reported results will be followed by a series of measurements in Hall C, that will expand the studies of the $\Delta (1232)$ resonance offering a high precision insight within a wide kinematic range from low to high momentum transfers.

Test of light-lepton universality in τ decays with the Belle II experiment

We present a measurement of the ratio R µ = $\mathcal{B}$($τ^- → µ^-\overline{ν}_µν_τ$)/$\mathcal{B}(τ^- → e^-\overline{ν}_eν_τ$) of branching fractions B of the τ lepton decaying to muons or electrons using data collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB e + e - collider. The sample has an integrated luminosity of 362 ± 2 fb -1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. Using an optimised event selection, a binned maximum likelihood ft is performed using the momentum spectra of the electron and muon candidates. The result, R µ = 0.9675 ± 0.0007 ± 0.0036, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, is the most precise to date. It provides a stringent test of the light-lepton universality, translating to a ratio of the couplings of the muon and electron to the W boson in τ decays of 0.9974 ± 0.0019, in agreement with the standard model expectation of unity.

Electroproduction of the Λ/Σ 0 hyperons at Q 2 ≃ 0.5 (GeV/c) 2 at forward angles

In 2018, the E12-17-003 experiment was conducted at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) to explore the possible existence of an nn⁢Λ state in the reconstructed missing mass distribution from a tritium gas target [K. N. Suzuki et al., Prog. Theor. Exp. Phys. 2022, 013D01 (2022); B. Pandey et al., Phys. Rev. C 105, L051001 (2022)]. As part of this investigation, data were also collected using a gaseous hydrogen target, not only for a precise absolute mass scale calibration but also for the study of Λ/Σ 0 electroproduction. This dataset was acquired at Q 2 ≃ 0.5 (GeV/c) 2 , W = 2.14 GeV, and θ$^{c.m.}_{γK}$ ≃ 8°. It covers forward angles where photoproduction data are scarce and a low-Q 2 region that is of interest for hypernuclear experiments. On the other hand, this kinematic region is at a slightly higher Q 2 than previous hypernuclear experiments, thus providing crucial information for understanding the Q 2 dependence of the differential cross sections for Λ/Σ 0 hyperon electroproduction. Here, this paper reports on the Q 2 dependence of the differential cross section for the e + p → e' + K + + Λ/Σ 0 reaction at 0.2–0.8 (GeV/c) 2 , and provides comparisons with the currently available theoretical models.

Measurement of branching-fraction ratios and CP asymmetries in B± → DCP±K± decays at Belle and Belle II

Abstract We report results from a study ofB ± → DK ± decays followed byDdecaying to theCP-even final stateK + K − and CP-odd final state$$ {K}_S^0{\pi}^0 $$ K S 0 π 0 , whereDis an admixture ofD 0 and$$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ D ¯ 0 states. These decays are sensitive to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity-triangle angleϕ 3 . The results are based on a combined analysis of the final data set of 772×10 6 $$ B\overline{B} $$ B B ¯ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and a data set of 198×10 6 $$ B\overline{B} $$ B B ¯ pairs collected by the Belle II experiment, both in electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S) resonance. We measure the CP asymmetries to be$$ \mathcal{A} $$ A CP+ = (+12.5±5.8±1.4)% and$$ \mathcal{A} $$ A CP− = (−16.7±5.7±0.6)%, and the ratios of branching fractions to be$$ \mathcal{R} $$ R CP+ = 1.164±0.081±0.036 and$$ \mathcal{R} $$ R CP− = 1.151±0.074±0.019. The first contribution to the uncertainties is statistical, and the second is systematic. The asymmetries$$ \mathcal{A} $$ A CP+ and$$ \mathcal{A} $$ A CP− have similar magnitudes and opposite signs; their difference corresponds to 3.5 standard deviations. From these values we calculate 68.3% confidence intervals of (8.5 ° <ϕ 3 < 16.5 ° ) or (84.5 ° <ϕ 3 < 95.5 ° ) or (163.3 ° <ϕ 3 < 171.5 ° ) and 0.321 B< 0.465.

Novel Measurement of the Neutron Magnetic Form Factor from A=3 Mirror Nuclei

The electromagnetic form factors of the proton and neutron encode information on the spatial structure of their charge and magnetization distributions. While measurements of the proton are relatively straightforward, the lack of a free neutron target makes measurements of the neutron's electromagnetic structure more challenging and more sensitive to experimental or model-dependent uncertainties. Various experiments have attempted to extract the neutron form factors from scattering from the neutron in deuterium, with different techniques providing different, and sometimes large, systematic uncertainties. We present results from a novel measurement of the neutron magnetic form factor using quasielastic scattering from the mirror nuclei 3 H and 3 He, where the nuclear effects are larger than for deuterium but expected to largely cancel in the cross-section ratios. We extracted values of the neutron magnetic form factor for low-to-modest momentum transfer, 0.6 < Q 2 < 2.9 GeV 2 , where existing measurements give inconsistent results. The precision and Q 2 range of these data allow for a better understanding of the current world’s data and suggest a path toward further improvement of our overall understanding of the neutron’s magnetic form factor.

Search for charged-lepton flavor violation in Υ(2S) → ℓ∓τ± (ℓ = e, μ) decays at Belle

Abstract We report a search for the charged-lepton flavor violation in Υ(2S) →ℓ ∓ τ ± (ℓ=e, μ) decays using a 25 fb −1 Υ(2S) sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKBe + e − asymmetric-energy collider. Probing the electronic properties of gap states near the surface of n -SrTiO 3-δ / i -Si (001) heterojunctions with high sensitivity

We have measured soft x-ray resonant photoemission for the n–SrTiO 3–δ /i–Si⁡(001) (δ=~0.0003) hybrid semiconductor heterojunction with the goal of probing occupied electronic states in the band gap near the surface. By utilizing both swept energy, angle-integrated and fixed-energy, and angle-resolved spectroscopies, we identify the atomic and orbital character of the in-gap state as well as the different electronic phases that contribute to it. Specifically, we isolate the state associated with trapped charge on the n–SrTiO 3–δ surface that causes surface depletion from the localized gap state resulting from electron correlation effects in the complex oxide. Using an x-ray energy close to select dipole allowed TiL 3 → 3⁢d x-ray absorption resonances results in a 40-fold increase in sensitivity. Furthermore, this feature makes photoemission possible when probing electrons from dopants at concentrations as low as a few hundredths of a percent.

Quantum beats in two-color photoionization to the spin-orbit split continuum of Ar

We report a study of the quantum beats in two-color photoionization of argon. An attosecond extreme ultraviolet pulse train prepares an electronic wave packet of definite odd parity, with total angular momentum J = 1, targeting the states between 14.0 and 14.5 eV from the ground state. Two-photon ionization of this wave packet with a tunable infrared probe pulse makes the constituent states interfere in both continuum channels, corresponding to the core angular momenta j c = 1/2 and 3/2, respectively. We analyze photoelectron spectrograms as a function of the time delay of the probe pulse and identify oscillations due to several pairs of states through Fourier decomposition. We observe phase differences between the corresponding beat signals in the two spin-orbit split continua. Comparison of theoretical simulations with the experimental measurements allows us to interpret the amplitudes and phases of ionization signals. Furthermore, we express the observed phase differences in terms of the off-diagonal elements of the short-range scattering matrix and the dipole matrix elements to the continuum eigenchannels.

First Measurement of the EMC effect in 10 B and 11 B

The nuclear dependence of the inclusive inelastic electron scattering cross section (the EMC effect) has been measured for the first time in 10 B and 11 B. Previous measurements of the EMC effect in A ≤ 12 nuclei showed an unexpected nuclear dependence; 10 B and 11 B were measured to explore the EMC effect in this region in more detail. Results are presented for 9 Be, 10 B, 11 B, and 12 C at an incident beam energy of 10.6 GeV. The EMC effect in the boron isotopes was found to be similar to that for 9 Be and 12 C, yielding almost no nuclear dependence in the EMC effect in the range A = 4–12. Furthermore, this represents important new data supporting the hypothesis that the EMC effect depends primarily on the local nuclear environment due to the cluster structure of these nuclei.

Search for $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $ → ℓ ∓ τ ± with the semi-leptonic tagging method at Belle

We present a search for the lepton-flavor-violating decays ${B}_s^0$ → ℓ ∓ τ ± , where ℓ = e, μ, using the full data sample of 121 fb -1 collected at the Υ(5S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e - collider. We use ${B}_s^0{\overline{B}}_s^0$ events in which one ${B}_s^0$ meson is reconstructed in a semileptonic decay mode and the other in the signal mode. We find no evidence for (${B}_s^0$ → ℓ ∓ τ ± decays and set upper limits on their branching fractions at 90% confidence level as $\mathcal{B}$(${B}_s^0$ → e ∓ τ ± ) < 14 × 10 -4 and $\mathcal{B}$ (${B}_s^0$ → μ ∓ τ ± ) < 7.3 × 10 -4 . Our result represents the first upper limit on the ${B}_s^0$ → e ∓ τ ± decay rate.

Constraints on the onset of color transparency from quasielastic 12 C ⁡(𝑒,𝑒′⁢𝑝) up to 𝑄 2 = 14.2 (GeV/𝑐) 2

Quasielastic scattering on 12 C ⁡(𝑒,𝑒′⁢𝑝) was measured in Hall C at Jefferson Lab for spacelike four-momentum transfer squared 𝑄 2 in the range of 8–14.2(GeV/𝑐) 2 with proton momenta up to 8.3GeV/𝑐. The experiment was carried out in the upgraded Hall C at Jefferson Lab. It used the existing high-momentum spectrometer and the new super-high-momentum spectrometer to detect the scattered electrons and protons in coincidence. The nuclear transparency was extracted as the ratio of the measured yield to the yield calculated in the plane wave impulse approximation. Additionally, the transparency of the 1⁢𝑠 1/2 and 1⁢𝑝 3/2 shell protons in 12 C was extracted, and the asymmetry of the missing momentum distribution was examined for hints of the quantum chromodynamics prediction of color transparency. Furthermore, all of these results were found to be consistent with traditional nuclear physics and inconsistent with the onset of color transparency.

Search for lepton-flavor-violating τ decays into a lepton and a vector meson using the full Belle data sample

Charged-lepton-flavor-violation is predicted in several new physics scenarios. We update the analysis of τ lepton decays into a light charged lepton (ℓ = e ± or μ ± ) and a vector meson (V 0 = ρ 0 , Φ, ω, K *0 , or $\overline{K}$ *0 ) using 980 fb -1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB collider. No significant excess of such signal events is observed, and thus 90% credibility level upper limits are set on the τ → ℓV 0 branching fractions in the range of (1.7–4.3) × 10 -8 . These limits are improved by 30% on average from the previous results.

Determination of the titanium spectral function from ($e,e'p$) data

The E12-14-012 experiment, performed in Jefferson Lab Hall A, has measured the (e, e'p) cross section in parallel kinematics using a natural titanium target. In this paper, we report the analysis of the dataset obtained in different kinematics for our solid natural titanium target. Data were obtained in a range of missing momentum and missing energy between 15 ≲ p m ≲ 250 MeV / c and 12 ≲ E m ≲ 80 MeV, respectively, and using an electron beam energy of 2.2 GeV. We measured the reduced cross section with ~7% accuracy as a function of both missing momentum and missing energy. Furthermore, our Monte Carlo simulation, including both a model spectral function and the effects of final-state interactions, satisfactorily reproduces the data.
