Trans-Pacific HDR Satellite Communications Experiment Phase-2 Project Plan and Experimental Network

The trans-Pacific high data rate (TP-HDR) satellite communications experiment was proposed at the Japan-U.S. Cooperation in Space (JUCS) Program Workshop held in Hawaii in 1993 and remote high definition video post-production was demonstrated as the first phase trial. ATM-based 45 Mbps trans-Pacific link was established in the first phase, and the following experiments with 155 Mbps was planned as the phase 2. This paper describes the experimental network configuration and project plan of TP-HDR experiment phase 2. Additional information is provided in the original.

High Rate Data Delivery Thrust Area

In this paper, a brief description of the high rate data delivery (HRDD) thrust area, its focus and current technical activities being carried out by NASA centers including JPL, academia and industry under this program is provided. The processes and methods being used to achieve active participation in this program are presented. The developments in space communication technologies, which will shape NASA enterprise missions in the 21 st. century, are highlighted.

Satellite Networks: Architectures, Applications, and Technologies

Since global satellite networks are moving to the forefront in enhancing the national and global information infrastructures due to communication satellites' unique networking characteristics, a workshop was organized to assess the progress made to date and chart the future. This workshop provided the forum to assess the current state-of-the-art, identify key issues, and highlight the emerging trends in the next-generation architectures, data protocol development, communication interoperability, and applications. Presentations on overview, state-of-the-art in research, development, deployment and applications and future trends on satellite networks are assembled.

Trans-Pacific HDR Satellite Communications Experiment Phase-2: Experimental Network and Demonstration Plan

The trans-Pacific high data rate (TP-HDR) satellite communications experiment was proposed at the Japan-U.S. Cooperation in Space (JUCS) Program Workshop held in Hawaii in 1993 and remote high definition video post-production was demonstrated as the first phase trial. Following the first phase, the second phase experiment is currently prepared. This paper describes the experimental network configuration, application demonstration, and performance evaluation plan of the second phase experiment.

Superconducting Field-Effect Transistors

Devices offer switching speeds greater than semiconducting counterparts. High-Tc superconducting field-effect transistors (SUPEFETs) investigated for use as electronic switches in delay-line-type microwave phase shifters. Resemble semiconductor field-effect transistors in some respects, but their operation based on different principle; namely, electric-field control of transition between superconductivity and normal conductivity.

Optical technologies for space communication systems; Proceedings of the Meeting, Los Angeles, CA, Jan. 15, 16, 1987

The conference presents papers on optical communications in space, diode laser transmitters, lasercom link transmission characteristics, lasercom systems and technologies, high frequency optical components, and optically controlled phased array antennas. Particular attention is given to a deep space optical communications development program, 0.87-micron CSP diode lasers for spaceborne communications, performance measurements of a diode laser optical communications link with Q = 4 PPM signaling, the optical communications link design for the tracking and data acquisition system, and a cost-performance model for ground-based optical communications receiving telescopes. Other topics include optoelectronic componentry for the direct transmission of microwave signals over optical fiber, applications of monolithic detectors, and optical control considerations for phased array antennas.
