Optoelectronic Control Of Phased-Array Antenna

Radiation patterns switched within microseconds. According to concept, digital beam-steering information destined for number of phased antenna elements transmitted in serial multiplex along optical fiber to optoelectronic integrated circuit (OEIC), demultiplexing information into parallel electronic channels to phase shifters associated with various elements. Because of small distances between elements of such arrays, compactness of optical fibers makes them attractive for distribution of beam-steering (phase-shifting) control signals. Also offers advantages of light weight, low attenuation, mechanical flexibility, large bandwidth, and immunity to both crosstalk and electromagnetic interference.

An analysis of the frequency limitations of an Al(x)Ga(1-x)As/GaAs optical modulator

An analysis is made of the frequency response of an Al(x)Ga(1-x)As/GaAs optical modulator operating at a wavelength of 0.83 micron and utilizing the linear-optic effect in a Mach-Zehnder configuration. It is shown that, in semiconductor modulators, electroabsorption should be taken into account in optimizing the frequency response of the device. It is also shown that, by incorporating an insulator (a semiconductor with a large band gap) between the metallic electrode and the channel, the capacitance of the electroabsorptive modulator can be kept low at a reasonable value under the worst conditions.

Conductor-backed coplanar waveguide resonators of Y-Ba-Cu-O and Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O on LaAlO3

Conductor-backed coplanar waveguide (CBCPW) resonators operating at 10.8 GHz have been fabricated from Tl-Ba-Ca-O (TBCCO) and Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) thin films on LaAlO3. The resonators consist of a coplanar waveguide (CPW) patterned on the superconducting film side of the LaAlO3 substrate with a gold ground plane coated on the opposite side. These resonators were tested in the temperature range from 14 to 106 K. At 77 K, the best of our TBCCO and YBCO resonators have an unloaded quality factor (Qo) 7 and 4 times, respectively, larger than that of a similar all-gold resonator. In this study, the Qo's of the TBCCO resonators were larger than those of their YBCO counterparts throughout the aforementioned temperature range.

Electrical-transport properties and microwave device performance of sputtered TlCaBaCuO superconducting thin films

The paper describes the processing and electrical transport measurements for achieving reproducible high-Tc and high-Jc sputtered TlCaBaCuO thin films on LaAlO3 substrates, for microelectronic applications. The microwave properties of TlCaBaCuO thin films were investigated by designing, fabricating, and characterizing microstrip ring resonators with a fundamental resonance frequency of 12 GHz on 10-mil-thick LaAlO3 substrates. Typical unloaded quality factors for a ring resonator with a superconducting ground plane of 0.3 micron-thickness and a gold ground plane of 1-micron-thickness were above 1500 at 65 K. Typical values of penetration depth at 0 K in the TlCaBaCuO thin films were between 7000 and 8000 A.

C-band superconductor/semiconductor hybrid field-effect transistor amplifier on a LaAlO3 substrate

A single-stage C-band superconductor/semiconductor hybrid field-effect transistor amplifier was designed, fabricated, and tested at 77 K. The large area (1 inch x 0.5 inches) high temperature superconducting Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O (TBCCO) thin film was rf magnetron sputtered onto a LaAlO3 substrate. The film had a transition temperature of about 92 K after it was patterned and etched. The amplifier showed a gain of 6 dB and a 3 dB bandwidth of 100 MHz centered at 7.9 GHz. An identical gold amplifier circuit was tested at 77 K, and these results are compared with those from the hybrid amplifier.

Performance of a wideband GaAs low-noise amplifier at cryogenic temperatures

The gain and noise figure performance of a GaAs amplifier at cryogenic temperatures has been studied. Results obtained indicate that a lower noise figure and a higher gain are induced by decreasing the temperature, while no significant change in the input 1-dB compression point is observed. Repeated temperature cycling had no adverse effect on the amplifier performance.

Performance of a K-band superconducting annular ring antenna

Superconducting annular ring antennas operating in the TM12 mode at 21 GHz are designed and fabricated on a lanthanum aluminate substrate using a YBCO high-temperature superconducting thin film. The efficiencies and far-field antenna patterns are measured and compared with an identical antenna patterned with silver. The resonant frequencies and experimental far-field patterns agree well with published models, and efficiency measurements show a maximum improvement of 6 percent at 20 K in the efficiency of the HTS antenna when compared to the silver ring at the same temperature.

10 GHz YBa2Cu3O7-delta Superconducting Ring Resonators on NdGaO3 Substrates

YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films were formed on NdGaO3 substrates by laser ablation. Critical temperatures greater than 89 K and critical current densities exceeding 2 x 10(exp.6) A cm(exp.-2) at 77 K were obtained. The microwave performance of films patterned into microstrip ring resonators with gold ground planes was measured. An unloaded quality factor six times larger than a that of a gold resonator of identical geometry was achieved. The unloaded quality factor decreased below 70 K for both the superconducting and gold resonators due to increasing dielectric losses in the substrate. The temperature dependence of the loss tangent of NdGaO3 was extracted from the measurements.

Coaxial line configuration for microwave power transmission study of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) thin films

Microwave transmission measurements through YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (YBCO) high-transition-temperature superconducting thin films on lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO3) have been performed in a coaxial line at 10 GHz. LaAlO3 substrates were ultrasonically machined into washer-shaped discs, polished, and coated with laser-ablated YBCO. These samples were mounted in a 50-ohm coaxial air line to form a short circuit. The power transmitted through the films as a function of temperature was used to calculate the normal state conductivity and the magnetic penetration depth for the films.

Microwave properties of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) high-transition-temperature superconducting thin films measured by the power transmission method

The microwave response of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) superconducting thin films deposited on LaAlO3, MgO, YSZ, and LaGaO3 substrates are studied. It is found that the microwave transmission properties are very weakly dependent on temperature in the normal state but change drastically upon transition to the superconducting state. In particular, the transmission decreases and there is a negative phase shift with respect to the phase at room temperature when the sample is cooled through its transition temperature. The magnetic penetration depth for all the films was determined from the surface reactance of the films. The microwave complex conductivity is determined in both the normal and the superconducting state. It is observed that both sigma1 and sigma2 increase in transition to the superconducting state. The surface resistivity is calculated for all the films.

High temperature superconductor analog electronics for millimeter-wavelength communications

The performance of high temperature superconductor (HTS) passive microwave circuits up to X-band was encouraging when compared to their metallic counterparts. The extremely low surface resistance of HTS films up to about 10 GHz enables a reduction in loss by as much as 100 times compared to copper when both materials are kept at about 77 K. However, a superconductor's surface resistance varies in proportion to the frequency squared. Consequently, the potential benefit of HTS materials to millimeter-wave communications requires careful analysis. A simple ring resonator was used to evaluate microstrip losses at Ka-band. Additional promising components were investigated such as antennas and phase shifters. Prospects for HTS to favorable impact millimeter-wave communications systems are discussed.
