Study of the doubly charmed tetraquark $\mathrm{T}$ $^+_{cc}$

Quantum chromodynamics, the theory of the strong force, describes interactions of coloured quarks and gluons and the formation of hadronic matter. Conventional hadronic matter consists of baryons and mesons made of three quarks and quark-antiquark pairs, respectively. Particles with an alternative quark content are known as exotic states. Here a study is reported of an exotic narrow state in the D 0 D 0 π + mass spectrum just below the D *+ D 0 mass threshold produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The state is consistent with the ground isoscalar T$^{+}_{cc}$ tetraquark with a quark content of cc$\bar{u}\bar{d}$ and spin-parity quantum numbers J P = 1 + . Study of the DD mass spectra disfavours interpretation of the resonance as the isovector state. The decay structure via intermediate off-shell D *+ mesons is consistent with the observed D 0 π+ mass distribution. To analyse the mass of the resonance and its coupling to the D*D system, a dedicated model is developed under the assumption of an isoscalar axial-vector T$^{+}_{cc}$ state decaying to the D*D channel. Using this model, resonance parameters including the pole position, scattering length, effective range and compositeness are determined to reveal important information about the nature of the T$^{+}_{cc}$ state. In addition, an unexpected dependence of the production rate on track multiplicity is observed.

Observation of an exotic narrow doubly charmed tetraquark

Conventional, hadronic matter consists of baryons and mesons made of three quarks and a quark–antiquark pair, respectively. Here, we report the observation of a hadronic state containing four quarks in the Large Hadron Collider beauty experiment. This so-called tetraquark contains two charm quarks, a \(\overline{{{{{u}}}}}\) and a \(\overline{{{{{d}}}}}\) quark. This exotic state has a mass of approximately 3,875 MeV and manifests as a narrow peak in the mass spectrum of D 0 D 0 π + mesons just below the D *+ D 0 mass threshold. The near-threshold mass together with the narrow width reveals the resonance nature of the state.

Search for the decay $B^0$ → $\phiμ^+μ^–$

A search for the decay $B^0$ → $\phiμ^+μ^–$ is performed using proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 . No evidence for the $B^0$ → $\phiμ^+μ^–$ decay is found and an upper limit on the branching fraction, excluding the $\phi$ and charmonium regions in the dimuon spectrum, of 4.4 × 10 –3 at a 90% credibility level, relative to that of the $B^0_s$ → $\phiμ^+μ^–$ branching fraction and assuming a phase-space model, the absolute branching fraction of the $B^0$ → $\phiμ^+μ^–$ in the full q 2 range is determined to be less than 3.2 x 10 –9 at a 90% credibility level.

Observation of the doubly charmed baryon decay $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ →$Ξ_c^{'+}π^+$

The $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ →$Ξ_c^{'+}π^+$ decay is observed using proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb –1 . The $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ →$Ξ_c^{'+}π^+$ decay is reconstructed partially, where the photon from the $Ξ_c^{'+}$ →$Ξ^+_cγ$ decay is not reconstructed and the $ρK^-π^+$ final state of the $Ξ^+_c$ baryon is employed. The $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ →$Ξ_c^{'+}π^+$ branching fraction relative to that of the $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ →$Ξ_c^+π^+$ decay is measured to be 1.41 ± 0.17 ± 0.10, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Centrality determination in heavy-ion collisions with the LHCb detector

The centrality of heavy-ion collisions is directly related to the created medium in these interactions. A procedure to determine the centrality of collisions with the LHCb detector is implemented for lead-lead collisions at √ s NN = 5 TeV and lead-neon fixed-target collisions at √ s NN = 69 GeV. The energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter are used to determine and define the centrality classes. The correspondence between the number of participants and the centrality for the lead-lead collisions is in good agreement with the correspondence found in other experiments, and the centrality measurements for the lead-neon collisions presented here are performed for the first time in fixed-target collisions at the LHC.

Search for massive long-lived particles decaying semileptonically at ${\sqrt{s}}=13\,\hbox {TeV}$

A search is performed for massive long-lived particles (LLPs) decaying semileptonically into a muon and two quarks. Two kinds of LLP production processes were considered. In the first, a Higgs-like boson with mass from 30 to 200\,GeV\!/c 2 is produced by gluon fusion and decays into two LLPs. The analysis covers LLP mass values from 10\,GeV\!/c 2 up to about one half the Higgs-like boson mass. The second LLP production mode is directly from quark interactions, with LLP masses from 10 to 90\,GeV\!/c 2 . The LLP lifetimes considered range from 5 to 200 ps. This study uses LHCb data collected from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=13\,TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4\,fb -1 . No evidence of these long-lived states has been observed, and upper limits on the production cross-section times branching ratio have been set for each model considered.

Study of charmonium and charmonium-like contributions in $\mathrm{B}^+$ → $\mathrm{J/ψηK^+}$ decays

A study of B+ → J/ψηK + decays, followed by J/ψ → μ + μ – and η → γγ, is performed using a dataset collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 The J/ψη mass spectrum is investigated for contributions from charmonia and charmonium-like states. Evidence is found for the B + →(ψ2(3823) → J/ψη)K + and B + → (ψ(4040) → J/ψη)K + decays with significance of 3.4 and 4.7 standard deviations, respectively. This constitutes the first evidence for the ψ 2 (3823) → J/ψη decay.

Observation of $Λ^0_b$ → $D^+ρπ^-π^-$ and $Λ^0_b$ → $D^{*+}ρπ^-π^-$ decays

The multihadron decays $Λ^0_b$ → $D+ρπ-π-$ and $Λ^0_b$ → $D^*+ρπ-π-$ are observed in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb -1 , collected in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV by the LHCb detector. Using the decay $Λ^0_b$ → $Λ^+_cπ^+π^-π^-$ as a normalisation channel, the ratio of branching fractions is measured to be $\frac {\mathcal{B} ( Λ^0_b → D^+ρπ^-π^-)} {\mathcal{B} (Λ^0_b → Λ^0_cπ^+π^-π^-)}$ x $\frac{\mathcal{B} (D^+ → K^-π^+π^+)} {\mathcal{B}(Λ^o_c → ρK^-π^-)}$ = (%.35 ± 0.21 ± 0.16)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The ratio of branching fractions for the $Λ^0_b$ → $D^{*+}ρπ^-π^-$ and $Λ^0_b$ → $D^+ρπ^-π^-$ decays is found to be $\frac {\mathcal{B} ( Λ^0_b → D^{*+}ρπ^-π^-)} {\mathcal{B} (Λ^0_b → D^+ρπ^-π^-)}$ X ($\mathcal{B} (D^{*+}→ D^+π^0)$ + $\mathcal{B} (D^{*+}→ D^+γ)$) = (61.3 ± 4.3 ± 4.0)%.

Test of lepton universality in beauty-quark decays

The standard model of particle physics currently provides our best description of fundamental particles and their interactions. The theory predicts that the different charged leptons, the electron, muon and tau, have identical electroweak interaction strengths. Previous measurements have shown that a wide range of particle decays are consistent with this principle of lepton universality. This article presents evidence for the breaking of lepton universality in beauty-quark decays, with a significance of 3.1 standard deviations, based on proton–proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are of processes in which a beauty meson transforms into a strange meson with the emission of either an electron and a positron, or a muon and an antimuon. If confirmed by future measurements, this violation of lepton universality would imply physics beyond the standard model, such as a new fundamental interaction between quarks and leptons.
