Analysis of multispectral (red-green-blue, RGB) satellite image composites can be used to improve understanding of thermodynamic and / or dynamic features associated with the development of significant weather events (cyclones, hurricanes, intense convection, turbulence, etc.) The enhanced water vapor imaging capabilities of the Advanced Baseline Imager on GOES-16 and GOES-17 satellites provide a unique opportunity to demonstrate this capability through a comparison of the Air Mass (AM) and Differential Water Vapor (DWV) RGB image products for several case studies.

The launch of next-generation satellites with advanced sensors, such as Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory with the GPM Microwave Imager (GMI) and Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) onboard, provide a unique opportunity to develop new products, tools, and capabilities to enhance operational weather forecasting. Many of the next-generation weather satellites boast of capabilities that have never been used in the operational environment. The operational environment is often fast-paced and requires forecasters to examine and make decisions based on analyzing many different types of data very quickly, particularly in rapidly evolving weather threat situations. This is a stark contrast to the research world, where researchers use a limited number of datasets to answer very specific scientific questions, taking months or years to perform analyses and arrive at conclusions. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Short-term Prediction Research and Transition (SPoRT) Center strives to bridge the gap between researchers and the operational community of end users to facilitate the transition of research products and capabilities to an operational environment. The next-generation S-NPP and NOAA-20 Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) temperature and moisture profiles can provide valuable observations; (1) Where conventional radiosonde observations are sparse, (2) Between radiosonde launches. CrIS observations are combined with the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) to produce high quality vertical soundings in clear and partly cloudy conditions. NUCAPS (NOAA Unique Combined Atmospheric Processing System) is the operational algorithm for processing combined hyperspectral infrared and microwave measurements. NUCAPS Soundings are operationally available in AWIPS as Skew-T plots. The capability to visualize the data in plan view or cross section would be valuable to maximize the benefits of NUCAPS data in AWIPS. A multi-organizational collaboration through the JPPS Soundings Applications Initiative developed the capability for plan view and cross section displays of NUCAPS in AWIPS (i.e., Gridded NUCAPS).
SPoRT (NASA's Short-term Prediction Research and Transition Center) has collaboratively worked with Alaska WFOs (Weather Forecast Offices) to introduce RGB (Red/Green/Blue false color image) imagery to prepare for NOAA-20 (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, JPSS (Joint Polar Satellite System) series-20 satellite) VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) and improve forecasting aviation-related hazards. Last R2O/O2R (Research-to-Operations/Operations-to-Research) steps include incorporating NOAA-20 VIIRS in RGB suite and fully transitioning client-side RGB processing to GINA (Geographic Information Network of Alaska) and Alaska Region. Alaska Region WFOs have been part of the successful R2O/O2R story to assess the use of NESDIS (National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service) Snowfall Rate product in operations. SPoRT introduced passive microwave rain rate and IMERG (Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (Global Precipitation Measurement)) (IMERG) to Alaska WFOs for use in radar-void areas and assessing flooding potential. SPoRT has been part of the multi-organization collaborative effort to introduce Gridded NUCAPS (NOAA Unique CrIS/ATMS (Crosstrack Infrared Sounder/Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder) Processing System) to the Anchorage CWSU (Center Weather Service Unit) to assess Cold Air Aloft events, [and as part of NOAA's PG (Product Generation) effort].
