Fluidic angular velocity sensor

A fluidic sensor providing a differential pressure signal proportional to the angular velocity of a rotary input is described. In one embodiment the sensor includes a fluid pump having an impeller coupled to a rotary input. A housing forming a constricting fluid flow chamber is connected to the fluid input of the pump. The housing is provided with a fluid flow restrictive input to the flow chamber and a port communicating with the interior of the flow chamber. The differential pressure signal measured across the flow restrictive input is relatively noise free and proportional to the square of the angular velocity of the impeller. In an alternative embodiment, the flow chamber has a generally cylindrical configuration and plates having flow restrictive apertures are disposed within the chamber downstream from the housing port. In this embodiment, the differential pressure signal is found to be approximately linear with the angular velocity of the impeller.

Filters for Submillimeter Electromagnetic Waves

New manufacturing process produces filters strong, yet have small, precise dimensions and smooth surface finish essential for dichroic filtering at submillimeter wavelengths. Many filters, each one essentially wafer containing fine metal grid made at same time. Stacked square wires plated, fused, and etched to form arrays of holes. Grid of nickel and tin held in brass ring. Wall thickness, thickness of filter (hole depth) and lateral hole dimensions all depend upon operating frequency and filter characteristics.

Rotary Speed Sensor for Antilocking Brakes

Sensor based on fluidic principles produces negative pressure approximately proportional to rotational speed. Sensor developed as part of antilocking brake system for motorcycles. Uses inlet pressure rather than outlet pressure as braking-control signal, eliminating pressure pulsations caused by pump vanes and ensuring low-noise signal. Sensor is centrifugal air pump turned by one of motorcycle wheels. Air enters pump through orifice plates, and suction taken off through port in pump inlet plenum.

Sun Tracker Operates a Year Between Calibrations

Low-cost modification of Sun tracker automatically compensates equation of time and seasonal variations in declination of Sun. Output of Scotch Yoke drive mechanism adjusted through proper sizing of crank, yoke and other components and through choice of gear ratios to approximate seasonal northand south motion of Sun. Used for industrial solar-energy monitoring and in remote meteorological stations.

Discriminating Between Liquid and Gas Flows

Flow sensor distinguishes flowing gases from liquids. Sensor allows liquids to pass, but would signal valve to turn off flow of gases. Concept developed for propulsion systems in which liquid fuel is forced out of storage tank by high-pressure gas. Controller stops flow of gas from fuel tank after liquid has been depleted.

Field limiter for solar radiometers

Lenses project solar image onto aperature to exclude circumsolar radiation, more precisely measuring energy captured by receiver aperatures of highly-concentrating solar thermal-energy converters. First version uses achromatic objective lens to form image of Sun at aperature ahead of radiometer cavity. Smaller second version with shorter focal length forms image magnified by another lens and thrown onto aperature. Both Versions require calibration against standard radiometer.

Short-range self-pulsed optical radar

Laser for radar device is retriggered when previous laser pulse is reflected from target. Target range R is computed from number of pulses triggered per time interval. Radar accurately measures distances up to 500 meters; it is useful for determining surface shape of relfectors in large, high-gain, highly directional antennas and for other short-range surveying.

Four-cell solar tracker

Forty cm Sun tracker, consisting of optical telescope and four solar cells, stays pointed at Sun throughout day for maximum energy collection. Each solar cell generates voltage proportional to part of solar image it receives; voltages drive servomotors that keep image centered. Mirrored portion of cylinder extends acquisition angle of device by reflecting Sun image back onto solar cells.

Downhole pressure sensor

Sensor remains accurate in spite of varying temperatures. Very accurate, sensitive, and stable downhole pressure measurements are needed for vaiety of reservoir engineering applications, such as deep petroleum reservoirs, especially gas reservoirs, and in areas of high geothermal gradient.

Thermal energy transformer

For use in combination with a heat engine, a thermal energy transformer is presented. It is comprised of a flux receiver having a first wall defining therein a radiation absorption cavity for converting solar flux to thermal energy, and a second wall defining an energy transfer wall for the heat engine. There is a heat pipe chamber interposed between the first and second walls having a working fluid disposed within the chamber and a wick lining the chamber for conducting the working fluid from the second wall to the first wall. Thermal energy is transferred from the radiation absorption cavity to the heat engine.

Stacked solar cells measure X-ray exposure

Stacked arrangement of solar cells and scintillating sheets in alternating layers produces very sensitive X-ray measuring device. Sensor is compatible with short exposure times typical of modern X-ray film, making it suitable for application in medical soft X-ray facilities.

Body/bone-marrow differential-temperature sensor

Differential-temperature sensor developed to compare bone-marrow and body temperature in leukemia patients uses single stable amplifier to monitor temperature difference recorded by thermocouples. Errors are reduced by referencing temperatures to each other, not to separate calibration points.

Calibration standards and field instruments for the precision measurement of insolation

The design of a fieldworthy survey instrument based on a developed radiation calibration standard is discussed. The radiometer system, a fieldworthy modification of Pacrad, is an all-weather solar radiometer, and a field test is described which demonstrates the instrument's stability in severe environments over an extended period of time. It is suggested that the instrument may be considered a transfer standard as well as a radiometer. It is hoped that future modifications might reduce the 15-deg view angle and improve the tracking system to eliminate weekly manual declination adjustments.

Calibration standards and field instruments for the precision measurement of insolation

The paper describes the development of an absolute calibration standard for irradiance measurements. This field instrument, designated the Kendall Radiometer System Mark 3, is identical to the PACRAD (Primary Absolute Cavity Radiometer) except for a modification to ensure all weather operation. Two Mark 3 radiometers have been in operation at the JPL's Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex for over two years and are continuing to provide data which are within plus or minus 1% of the absolute value. A calibration stability analysis is presented for the two instruments.

Selective image area control of X-ray film exposure density

A system for accurately determining the exposure density required for X-ray photography of a particular area of interest is provided. The light received from an X-ray image intensifier is applied to a beam splitting mirror which divides the light between a motion picture film camera and a television film camera. Between the beam splitter and the motion picture film camera, there is positioned another light beam splitter to direct some of the light at a mask having an opening which encloses only the image area of interest. Behind that opening there is positioned a photomultiplier intensity sensor for determining the exposure required and varying X-ray beam intensity accordingly.

Applications of aerospace technology to petroleum extraction and reservoir engineering

Through contacts with the petroleum industry, the petroleum service industry, universities and government agencies, important petroleum extraction problems were identified. For each problem, areas of aerospace technology that might aid in its solution were also identified, where possible. Some of the problems were selected for further consideration. Work on these problems led to the formulation of specific concepts as candidate for development. Each concept is addressed to the solution of specific extraction problems and makes use of specific areas of aerospace technology.

Precision insolation measurement under field conditions

The paper describes a precision insolation instrument - the Mark 3 Kendall Radiometer - developed for field survey work and for use as a calibration transfer standard. The instrument, which can be used to make accurate measurements of solar irradiance, has a windowless black cavity receptor mounted in a massive heat sink and has equal sensitivity to ultraviolet, infrared, and visible radiation. Attention is given to a calibration stability analysis over two years of operation.
