Viking Orbiter stereophotogrammetry

Orbit characteristics of the two Viking Orbiter spacecraft made possible the acquisition of high-resolution imagery of the Martian surface, resulting in many excellent convergent stereopairs. Evaluation of these stereopairs presented a few unconventional problems because the routine relative orientation was not feasible, mainly due to a lack of good passpoints and to the technical peculiarities of TV vidicon imaging techniques. One of the ways to circumvent these problems is to use the orbital and navigational parameters of the spacecraft for an external 'forced' relative orientation. This approach requires a number of rotations and counter-rotations between various coordinate systems, which may make the involved mathematics look rather complicated, but its computational applications become very simple, fast, accurate, and inexpensive.

Mariner Mars 9 stereophotogrammetry

Discussion of the equipment and orbital specifications of the Mariner Mars 9 spacecraft - a Martian orbiter which was placed in orbit on Nov. 14, 1971, for an expected 50-year stay and has made possible a practically 100% photographic coverage of the planet's surface. The orbit has a nominal 12-hr period, a nominal periapsis of 1300 km, and a nominal apoapsis of 18,000 km. Many of the outstanding topographic features of the planet have been covered by the convergent stereopairs carried by the orbiter. Theoretical considerations are set forth concerning the necessary instrument orientation and rotation requirements to achieve such performance levels in this extraterrestrial application of photogrammetry. The photogrammetric method used in this mission is assessed as useful in the evaluation of outstanding Martian features such as the mammoth volcano of the Nix Olympica region.

Mariner Mars 9 stereophotogrammetry

Many of the outstanding Martian topographic features were covered by convergent stereopairs. A method used for their solution is described. An analytical evaluation of a stereopair is based on the principle of relative orientation. It is possible to perform an external relative orientation. The rotational and translational parameters in this case are determined indirectly from orbital and spacecraft data.

Mariner Mars 1971 photogrammetric calibrations.

One of the major objectives of the Mariner Mars 1971 mission was the systematic mapping of Mars. This required a complex and thorough photogrammetric calibration of both the wide-angle and narrow-angle cameras mounted on the spacecraft scan platform. Because of the peculiarities of the TV imaging techniques (transmission quality, low resolution, electronic distortion, etc.), combined with the extremely small vidicon format, many unique difficulties were encountered and many unprecedented problems had to be solved. Their successful solution, based on experience gained during the Surveyor and Mariner Mars 1969 projects, is discussed, and the calibration procedure for the parameters of interior orientation, as well as for opto-mechanical orthogonality, is described in detail.
