The role of manganese in CoMnO x catalysts for selective long-chain hydrocarbon production via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis
Cobalt is an efficient catalyst for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) of hydrocarbons from syngas (CO + H 2 ) with enhanced selectivity for long-chain hydrocarbons when promoted by Manganese. However, the molecular scale origin of the enhancement remains unclear. Here we present an experimental and theoretical study using model catalysts consisting of crystalline CoMnO x nanoparticles and thin films, where Co and Mn are mixed at the sub-nm scale. Employing TEM and in-situ X-ray spectroscopies (XRD, APXPS, and XAS), we determine the catalyst’s atomic structure, chemical state, reactive species, and their evolution under FTS conditions. We show the concentration of CH x , the key intermediates, increases rapidly on CoMnO x , while no increase occurs without Mn. DFT simulations reveal that basic O sites in CoMnO x bind hydrogen atoms resulting from H 2 dissociation on Co 0 sites, making them less available to react with CH x intermediates, thus hindering chain termination reactions, which promotes the formation of long-chain hydrocarbons.
Mechanism and Kinetics of Ethanol–Acetaldehyde Conversion to 1,3-Butadiene over Isolated Lewis Acid La Sites in Silanol Nests in Dealuminated Beta Zeolite
Biomass-derived ethanol (EtOH) and acetaldehyde (AcH) conversion to 1,3-butadiene (1,3-BD) is an alternative process for 1,3-BD production. The present investigation reports the preparation and characterization of isolated La sites introduced into the silanol nests in DeAlBEA as well as detailed studies of the mechanism and kinetics for the conversion of an EtOH-AcH mixture to 1,3-BD. La sites supported on DeAlBEA are found to be present as (≡SiO) 2 La-OH groups that are H-bonded with adjacent Si-OH groups, possessing high C-C coupling activity and stability, superior to state-of-the-art Y-DeAlBEA. La sites supported on silica (La-SiO 2 ) with a similar chemical structure but no H-bonding interaction with Si-OH groups were prepared for comparison. Lewis acid La sites promote AcH aldol condensation, and the activity of such sites is nearly identical for both La-DeAlBEA and La-SiO 2 . Further, the rate of C 4 product formation increases by a factor of 4.8 upon addition of EtOH to the feed of AcH over La-DeAlBEA, whereas that over La/SiO 2 remains unchanged. Investigation of the mechanism and kinetics of AcH aldol condensation and EtOH-AcH conversion to 1,3-BD revealed two C-C bond forming pathways-AcH aldol condensation by Lewis acid La sites and direct coupling of EtOH-AcH over H-bonded (≡SiO) 2 La-OH···HO-Si≡ sites. This study provides important information about the role of the local environment of isolated Lewis acid sites and their effects on the direct coupling of EtOH and AcH to form 1,3-BD.
Local ionic transport enables selective PGM-free bipolar membrane electrode assembly
Bipolar membranes in electrochemical CO 2 conversion cells enable different reaction environments in the CO 2 -reduction and O 2 -evolution compartments. Under ideal conditions, water-splitting in the bipolar membrane allows for platinum-group-metal-free anode materials and high CO 2 utilizations. In practice, however, even minor unwanted ion crossover limits stability to short time periods. Here we report the vital role of managing ionic species to improve CO 2 conversion efficiency while preventing acidification of the anodic compartment. Through transport modelling, we identify that an anion-exchange ionomer in the catalyst layer improves local bicarbonate availability and increasing the proton transference number in the bipolar membranes increases CO 2 regeneration and limits K + concentration in the cathode region. Through experiments, we show that a uniform local distribution of bicarbonate ions increases the accessibility of reverted CO 2 to the catalyst surface, improving Faradaic efficiency and limiting current densities by twofold. Using these insights, we demonstrate a fully platinum-group-metal-free bipolar membrane electrode assembly CO 2 conversion system exhibiting <1% CO 2 /cation crossover rates and 80-90% CO 2 -to-CO utilization efficiency over 150 h operation at 100 mA cm -2 without anolyte replenishment.
CO 2 Conversion to Butene via a Tandem Photovoltaic–Electrochemical/Photothermocatalytic Process: A Co-design Approach to Coupled Microenvironments
Here, we developed a tandem, unassisted, solar-driven electrochemical and photothermocatalytic process for the single-pass conversion of CO 2 to butene using only simulated solar irradiation as the energetic input. The two-step process involves electrochemical CO 2 reduction (CO 2 R) to ethylene followed by ethylene dimerization to butene. We assessed two unassisted electrochemical setups to concentrate ethylene in the CO 2 R reactor, achieving concentrations up to 5.4 vol.% with 1.8% average solar-to-ethylene conversion and 5.6% average CO 2 -to-ethylene single-pass conversion under 1-sun illumination. When passed through the photothermocatalytic ethylene oligomerization reactor, we generated 600 ppm of butene under 3-sun illumination. Through analysis of this process, we identified that the presence of H 2 , CO, and H 2 O leads to rapid deactivation of the Ni-based ethylene oligomerization catalyst.
Modeling Diurnal and Annual Ethylene Generation from Solar-Driven Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction Devices
Integrated solar fuels devices for CO 2 reduction (CO 2 R) are a promising technology class towards achieving net-negative carbon emissions. Designing integrated CO 2 R solar fuels devices requires careful co-design of electrochemical and photovoltaic components as well as consideration of the diurnal and seasonal effects of solar irradiance, temperature, and other meteorological factors expected for ‘on-sun’ deployment. Here, using a photovoltaic-electrochemical (PV-EC) platform, we developed a temperature and potential-dependent diurnal and annual model using experimental CO 2 R performance of Cu-based electrocatalysts, local meteorological data from the National Solar Radiation Database (NSRD), and modeled performance of commercial c-Si PVs. We simulated diurnal product outputs with and without the effects of ambient temperature to determine gaseous product temperature sensitivity. From these outputs, we observed seasonal variation in gaseous product generation, with up to two-fold increases in ethylene productivity between the Winter and Summer, analyzed the consequences of dynamic cloud coverage, and identified periods where device cooling/heating mechanisms could be implemented to maximize ethylene generation. Finally, we modeled the annual ethylene generation for a scaled 1 MW solar farm at three different locations (Beijing, CN; Sydney, AUS; Barstow, CA) to determine the consequences of local meteorological climates on PV-EC CO 2 R product output, recording a maximum ethylene output of 18.5 tonne/yr at Barstow. Overall, this model presents a critical tool for streamlining the translation of experimental solar-driven electrochemical research to real-world implementation.
Exploring CO 2 reduction and crossover in membrane electrode assemblies
Electrochemical CO 2 reduction (CO 2 R) using renewable electricity is a key pathway toward synthesizing fuels and chemicals. In this study, multi-physics modeling is used to interpret experimental data obtained for CO 2 R to CO using Ag catalysts in a membrane electrode assembly. The one-dimensional model is validated using measured CO 2 crossover and product formation rates. The kinetics of CO formation are described by Marcus–Hush–Chidsey kinetics, which enables accurate prediction of the experimental data by accounting for the reorganization of the solvent during CO 2 R. Further, the results show how the performance is dictated by competing phenomena including ion formation and transport, CO 2 solubility, and water management. The model shows that increasing the ion-exchange capacity of the membrane and surface area of the catalyst increases CO formation rates by >100 mA cm –2 without negatively impacting CO 2 utilization. Here we provide insights into how to manage the trade-off between productivity and CO 2 utilization in CO 2 electrolyzers.
