Pattern recognition and control in manipulation

A new approach to the use of sensors in manipulator or robot control is discussed. The concept addresses the problem of contact or near-contact type of recognition of three-dimensional forms of objects by proprioceptive and/or exteroceptive sensors integrated with the terminal device. This recognition of object shapes both enhances and simplifies the automation of object handling. Several examples have been worked out for the 'Belgrade hand' and for a parallel jaw terminal device, both equipped with proprioceptive (position) and exteroceptive (proximity) sensors. The control applications are discussed in the framework of a multilevel man-machine system control. The control applications create interesting new issues which, in turn, invite novel theoretical considerations. An important issue is the problem of stability in control when the control is referenced to patterns.

Algorithmic formulation of control problems in manipulation

The basic characteristics of manipulator control algorithms are discussed. The state of the art in the development of manipulator control algorithms is briefly reviewed. Different end-point control techniques are described together with control algorithms which operate on external sensor (imaging, proximity, tactile, and torque/force) signals in realtime. Manipulator control development at JPL is briefly described and illustrated with several figures. The JPL work pays special attention to the front or operator input end of the control algorithms.

Effect of hand-based sensors on manipulator control performance

The effect of hand based sensors (e.g tactile, force, and proximity sensors) on the performance of manipulator control is discussed. A brief overview is presented on various experimental hand based information systems which provide the manipulator controller some nonvisual awareness of the task environment. It is established that differences in manipulator task categories and motion phases require different hand based information systems to cope with control performance requirements.

Approach guidance for outer planet pioneer missions

Onboard optical approach guidance measurements for spin-stabilized Pioneer-type spacecraft are discussed. Approach guidance measurement accuracy requirements are outlined. The application concept and operation principle of the V-slit star tracker are discussed within the context of approach guidance measurements and measurables. It is shown that the accuracy of onboard optical approach guidance measurements is inherently coupled to the stability characteristics of the spacecraft spin axis. Geometrical and physical measurement parameters are presented for Pioneer entry probe missions to Uranus via Jupiter or Saturn flyby. The impact of these parameters on both sensor instrumentation and measurement system design is discussed. The need for sensing extended objects is shown. The feasibility of implementing an onboard approach guidance measurement system for Pioneer-type spacecraft is indicated. Two Pioneer 10 onboard measurement experiments performed in May-June 1974 are described.

Teleoperator/robot technology can help solve biomedical problems

Teleoperator and robot technology appears to offer the possibility to apply these techniques to the benefit for the severely handicapped giving them greater self reliance and independence. Major problem areas in the development of prostheses and remotely controlled devices for the handicapped are briefly discussed, and the parallelism with problems in the development of teleoperator/robots identified. A brief description of specific ongoing and projected developments in the area of remotely controlled devices (wheelchairs and manipulators) is provided.

Distribution of control decisions in remote manipulation

The particular characteristics of the problem of distributing control decisions between man and computer in remotely controlled manipulation are discussed. State of the art is reviewed from two viewpoints: (1) specifications of both control commands and control context of sensor signals the operator inputs to the manipulator control computer; (2) operations the manipulator control computer performs on operator commands and realtime sensor signals to control the manipulator for a specified task. JPL breadboard systems, system components, and control experiments are described related to the development and evaluation of manipulator control systems with capabilities of distributing control decisions between man and computer.

Approach guidance for outer planet Pioneer missions

An overall parametric system analysis of the use of an optical approach guidance measurement system (using a V-slit electrooptical 'star-pipper') onboard a Pioneer-type spin-stabilized spacecraft for outer planet missions. Optical measurements of satellites of Saturn and Uranus against the star background are considered. Measurement geometry and spacecraft attitude are evaluated in depth with respect to two Pioneer missions: Saturn-Uranus and Jupiter-Uranus atmospheric entry probe missions with departure from Earth in November/December, 1980. A preliminary evaluation of long-term attitude stability measurements of Pioneer 10 is presented in the Appendix. The major conclusions are: (1) at Saturn flyby, viewing some medium period satellites can provide the best measurement results. (2) At Uranus approach, viewing the planet may give best measurements if early bus-probe separation is required. (3) Final measurement accuracy depends on the data format transmitted to Earth and the applied data interpretation techniques.-

Robot arm dynamics and control

Variations in total inertia and gravity loads at the joint outputs are treated along with the relative importance of gravity and acceleration-generated reaction torques or forces versus inertia torques or forces. The relation between the dynamical state equations in explicit terms and servoing the manipulator is briefly discussed in the framework of state variable feedback control which also forms the basis of adaptive manipulator control. Exact state equations were determined for total inertia and gravity loads at the joint outputs as a function of joint variables, using the constant inertial and geometric parameters of the individual links defined in the respective link coordinate frames. The range of maximum variations in total inertia and gravity loads at the joint outputs was calculated for both no load and load in the hand. The main result is the construction of a set of greatly simplified state equations which describe the total inertia and gravity load variations at the output of the six joints with an average error of less than 5%.

Environment-sensitive manipulator control

Environment-sensitive manipulator control (control systems capable of controlling manipulator motion based on real-time response to sensor data obtained during the attempt to perform a requested task) is described, and experiments on (1) proximity control in manipulation and (2) application of an articulated and adaptively controlled hand-to-environment-sensitive manipulator control are reported. The efficiency of such systems is determined by the separation of control and data processing functions between operator and computer.

Machine intelligence for autonomous manipulation.

Survey of the present technological development status of machine intelligence for autonomous manipulation in the U.S., Japan, USSR, and England. The extent of task-performance autonomy is examined that machine intelligence gives the manipulator by eliminating the need for a human operator to close continuously the control loop, or to rewrite control programs for each different task. Surveyed research projects show that the development of some advanced automation systems for manipulator control are within the state of the art. Yet, many more realistic breadboard systems and experimental work are needed before further progress can be made in the design of advanced automation systems for manipulator control suitable for new major practical applications. Specific research areas of promise are pointed out.

Analytical methods for performance evaluation of nonlinear filters.

In the investigation, the filtering problem is considered in the continuous time domain. The postulated simple suboptimal nonlinear filter structure closely parallels the structure of the Kalman-Bucy optimal linear filter algorithm. Two filter performance evaluation methods are developed based on the Kolmogorov equations for the transition density of Markov processes. The expansions in the approximations for the nonlinear system and observation functions are in effect carried out up to second-order terms in both methods. The description of the filter's performance is sought in terms of second-order statistics in both methods.
