Searching for life with the Terrestrial Planet Finder: Lagrange point options for a formation flying interferometer

In this paper, we describe the mission design for TPF assuming a distributed spacecraft concept using formation flight around both a halo orbit around L2 as well as a heliocentric orbit. Although the mission architecture is still under study, the next two years will include study of four design cncepts and a downselect to two concepts around 2005.

Selected mission architectures for the Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF): large, medium, and small

Four teams incorporating scientists and engineers from more than 50 universities and 20 engineering firms have assessed techniques for detecting and characterizing terrestrial planets orbiting nearby stars. The primary conclusion from the effort of the past two years is that with suitable technology investment starting now, a mission to detect terrestrial planets around 150 nearby stars could be launched within a decade.

Captain Cook, the Terrestrial Planet Finder and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence

A recently completed NASA study has concluded that a Terrestrial Planet Finder could be launched within a decade to detect terrestrial planets around nearby stars. Such a mission, complemented by projects (Kepler and Eddington) that will provide statistical information on the frequency of Earth-sized planets in the habitable zone, will determine key terms in the Drake equation that describes the number of intelligent civilizations in the Universe.

The search for young planetary systems

The Space Interferometer Mission (SIM) will provide a census of planetary systems by conducting a broad survey of 2000 stars that will be sensitive to the presence of planets with masses as small as 15 Earth masses and a deep survey of 250 of the nearest stars with a mass limit of 3 Earth masses.

NASA's Terrestrial Planet Finder: The Search for (Habitable) Planets

One of the primary goals of NASA's Origins program is the search for habitable planets. I will describe how the Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF) will revolutionize our understanding of the origin and evolution of planetary systems, and possibly even find signs of life beyond the Earth.
