Deterministic Current–Induced Perpendicular Switching in Epitaxial Co/Pt Layers without an External Field

Current–induced spin–orbit torques (SOTs) have emerged as a powerful tool to control magnetic elements and non–uniform magnetic textures such as domain walls and skyrmions. SOT–induced switching of perpendicular magnetization generally requires an external field to break the rotational symmetry of the spin–orbit effective fields responsible for the deterministic reversal. The proposed mechanisms to eliminate this requirement often rely on complex multilayer structures that necessitate laborious optimization in the material and spin transport properties, making them less attractive for applications. Herein, current–induced, external field–free switching of an epitaxial MgO/Pt/Co trilayer with an extremely large perpendicular anisotropy in excess of 3 Tesla is reported. It is found that switching occurs due to the interplay of strong SOTs, local anisotropy fluctuations, and the Dzyaloshinkii–Moriya interaction inherent to this epitaxial system. Finally, given that these layers constitute the base stack of a magnetic tunnel junction, this switching mechanism offers the most technologically viable path toward devices such as field–free SOT–based magnetic random–access memories.

Coherent correlation imaging for resolving fluctuating states of matter

Fluctuations and stochastic transitions are ubiquitous in nanometre-scale systems, especially in the presence of disorder. However, their direct observation has so far been impeded by a seemingly fundamental, signal-limited compromise between spatial and temporal resolution. Here we develop coherent correlation imaging (CCI) to overcome this dilemma. Our method begins by classifying recorded camera frames in Fourier space. Contrast and spatial resolution emerge by averaging selectively over same-state frames. Temporal resolution down to the acquisition time of a single frame arises independently from an exceptionally low misclassification rate, which we achieve by combining a correlation-based similarity metric with a modified, iterative hierarchical clustering algorithm. We apply CCI to study previously inaccessible magnetic fluctuations in a highly degenerate magnetic stripe domain state with nanometre-scale resolution. We uncover an intricate network of transitions between more than 30 discrete states. Our spatiotemporal data enable us to reconstruct the pinning energy landscape and to thereby explain the dynamics observed on a microscopic level. CCI massively expands the potential of emerging high-coherence X-ray sources and paves the way for addressing large fundamental questions such as the contribution of pinning and topology in phase transitions and the role of spin and charge order fluctuations in high-temperature superconductivity.

Methods and apparatus for making magnetic skyrmions

A system and a method for the deterministic generation of magnetic skyrmions includes a magnetic strip configured to store and transport skyrmions. The magnetic strip includes one or more spatial inhomogeneities configured to generate a skyrmion at known locations when excited by a current pulse. A current pulse generator is used to inject current pulses into the magnetic strip via contact pads electrically coupled to both the current pulse generator and the magnetic strip. The system also includes a magnetic field source to apply an out-of-plane magnetic field across the magnetic strip to facilitate generation of skyrmions. Skyrmions can be generated by applying an out-of-plane magnetic field to the magnetic strip and injecting a current pulse with sufficient current density towards the spatial inhomogeneities. Once a skyrmion is generated, another current pulse with sufficient current density can be injected to move the skyrmion.
