Crystal structure and magnetic properties of Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19

Here, in this study, a novel magnetic semimetal compound, Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 , was synthesized successfully via high-temperature solid-state reaction. The crystal structure of Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 was determined using both single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction techniques, revealing a non-centrosymmetric orthorhombic space group, Pmn2 1 (No. 31). The Sb atoms in Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 form five-atom-wide Sb 5 7− ribbons, narrower three-atom-wide Sb 3 5− ribbons, and single Sb 3− anions. On the other hand, both Gd 3+ and Mn 2+ ions form the distorted Gd 3 and Mn 3 triangular lattices, respectively. The magnetic measurements suggest the complex magnetic interactions contributed by both Gd 3+ and Mn 2+ ions. A sharp peak observed in the magnetic susceptibility plot at approximately 25 K corresponds to the antiferromagnetic-type transition in Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 . Furthermore, the magnetic measurements along different directions indicate the strong magnetic anisotropy present in Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 , which is likely due to the complex magnetic interactions arising from the existence of Gd and Mn ions. Finally, the electrical resistivity measurements of Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 indicate semimetallic behavior with a positive magnetoresistance.

Mn(Pt 1–x Pd x ) 5 P: Isovalent tuning of Mn-sublattice magnetic order

Here, e report the growth and characterization of MnPd 5 P, a rare-earth-free ferromagnet, with T C ≈ 295 K and planar anisotropy, and conduct a substitutional study with its antiferromagnetic analogue MnPt 5 P. We provide a solution route to grow large single crystals of MnPd 5 P and the series Mn(Pt 1–x Pd x ) 5 P by adding Mn into Pd-P and (Pt 1–x Pd x )-P based melts. All compounds in the family adopt the layered anti-CeCoIn5 type structure with the space group P4/mmm, and EDS and X-ray diffraction results indicate that MnPt 5 P and MnPd 5 P form a complete solid solution. Based on measurements of the temperature- and field-dependent magnetization and resistance, we construct a temperature-composition (T-x) phase diagram for Mn(Pt 1–x Pd x ) 5 P and demonstrate that the initial antiferromagnetic order found in MnPt 5 P is extraordinarily sensitive to Pd substitution. At low Pd fractions (x < 0.010), the single antiferromagnetic transition in pure MnPt 5 P splits into a higher temperature ferromagnetic transition followed first, upon cooling, by a lower temperature ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition and then by a re-entrant antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition at even lower temperatures. The antiferromagnetic region makes up a bubble phase that persists up to x ≈ 0.008-0.009 for T ≈ 150 K, with all samples x < 0.008 recovering their initial ferromagnetic state upon further cooling to base temperature. Over the same low substitution range we find a non-monotonic change in the room temperature value of the unit cell volume, further suggesting that pure MnPt 5 P is very close to an instability. Once x > 0.010, Mn(Pt 1–x Pd x ) 5 P undergoes a only single transition into the ferromagnetic phase. The Curie temperature initially increases rapidly with x, rising from T C ≈ 197 K at x = 0.013 to a maximum of T C ≈ 312 K for x ≈ 0.62, and then falling back to T C ≈ 295 K for pure MnPd 5 P (x = 1.00). Given that Pt and Pd are isoelectronic, this work raises questions as to the origin of the extreme sensitivity of the magnetic ground state in MnPt 5 P upon introducing Pd.

Crystal growth and magnetic structure of ternary silicide Eu Pd 3 Si 2

The hexagonal CaCu 5 –type structure (P6/mmm) is the prototype for more than 100 ternary borides, gallides, and silicides, with general stoichiometry of RTM 3 X 2 (R=lanthanide/alkaline earth; TM=transition metal; X=B, Ga, Si, Ge). Here we report the synthesis, crystal structure, and bulk magnetic properties of polycrystalline and single crystal samples of EuPd 3 Si 2 and its nonmagnetic analog SrPd 3 Si 2 . Both compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic space group symmetry Imma (no. 74, Z = 2, oI12) displaying pseudohexagonal symmetry. Ferromagnetic (FM) order of Eu 2+ at T C1 =78K and a spin-reorientation transition at T C2 =5K appear as distinctive features in bulk magnetization, specific heat, and resistivity/resistance measurements. Neutron powder diffraction measurements on EuPd 3 Si 2 confirm FM order of the Eu 2+ spins below T C1 , with the spins aligned along the a axis below T C2 . Electronic band structure calculations corroborate the crystal structure and the FM state for EuPd 3 Si 2 , with a Pd d–band polarization in the same direction as the Eu 4f polarization, enhancing the observed spin moment.

Magnetic ordering in GdAuAl 4 Ge 2 and TbAuAl 4 Ge 2 : Layered compounds with triangular lanthanide nets

In this work, we report the synthesis and magnetic properties of GdAuAl 4 Ge 2 and TbAuAl 4 Ge 2 , where temperature and magnetic field dependent magnetization, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity measurements reveal that both compounds exhibit several magnetically ordered states at low temperatures, with evidence for magnetic fluctuations extending into the paramagnetic temperature region. For magnetic fields applied in the ab-plane there is particularly rich behavior, with several ordered state regions that are separated by metamagnetic phase transitions. Despite Gd being an isotropic S-state ion and Tb having an anisotropic J-state, there are similarities in the phase diagrams for the two compounds, suggesting that factors such as the symmetry of the crystalline lattice, which features well separated triangular planes of lanthanide ions, or the Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya– Yosida interaction control the magnetism. We also point out similarities to other centrosymmetric compounds that host skyrmion lattices such as Gd 2 PdSi 3 , and propose that the LnAuAl 4 Ge 2 family of compounds are of interest as reservoirs for complex magnetism and electronic behaviors.

Field-Induced Magnetic States in the Metallic Rare-Earth Layered Triangular Antiferromagnet TbAuAl 4 Ge 2

Magnetic frustration in metallic rare- earth lanthanides (Ln) with 4f electrons is crucial for producing interesting magnetic phases with high magnetic anisotropy where intertwined charge and spin degrees of freedom lead to novel phenomena. Here we report on the magnetic, thermodynamic, and electrical transport properties of TbAuAl 4 Ge 2 . Tb ions form two-dimensional triangular lattice layers which stack along the crystalline c axis. The magnetic phase diagram reveals multiple nearly degenerate ordered states upon applying field along the magnetically easy ab-plane before saturation. The magnetoresistance in this configuration exhibits intricate field dependence that closely follows that of the magnetization while the specific heat reveals a region of highly enhanced entropy, suggesting the possibility of a nontrivial spin textured phase. For fields applied along the c axis (hard axis), we find linear magnetoresistance over a wide range of fields. Further, we compare the magnetic properties and magnetoresistance with an isostructural GdAuAl 4 Ge 2 single crystal. These results identify TbAuAl 4 Ge 2 as an environment for complex quantum spin states and pave the way for further investigations of the broader LnAuAl 4 Ge 2 family of materials.

Structures and Magnetic Properties of K 2 Pd 4 U 6 S 17 , K 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , Rb 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , and Cs 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 Synthesized Using the Boron–Chalcogen Mixture Method

A series of A 2 M 4 U 6 S 17 (A = Alkali metal, M = Pd or Pt) compounds, specifically K 2 Pd 4 U 6 S 17 , K 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , Rb 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , and Cs 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , were synthesized using the combined Boron-Chalcogen Mixture (BCM) and molten flux crystal growth methods. The formation of the Rb- and Cs- containing analogues resulted from the in-situ alkali polysulfide flux formation formed from the alkali carbonates. The successful synthesis of single crystals of the title compounds allowed for their structural characterization by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure determination revealed disorder of the alkali cations in Rb 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , and Cs 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , while the potassium cations in K 2 Pd 4 U 6 S 17 and K 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 were fully ordered. Here, magnetic measurements were performed on samples of K 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , Rb 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , and Cs 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 that contained small amounts of paramagnetic β-US 2 and diamagnetic PtS. Antiferromagnetic order is observed at T N = 9.1 K for K 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 . No long-range magnetic order was observed for Rb 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 and Cs 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 . Uranium moments of 2.5, 2.6, and 2.6 μB were measured for K 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , Rb 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , and Cs 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , respectively.

Unexpected Hydride: Ce 4 B 2 C 2 H 2.42 , a Stuffed Variant of the Nd 2 BC Structure Type

Ce 4 B 2 C 2 H 2.42 was grown as large crystals from a cerium/copper eutectic flux. The structure was characterized by single-crystal X-ray and neutron diffraction and was found to be a stuffed variant of Nd 2 BC with the addition of two interstitial hydrogen positions. The tetrahedral hydrogen position is fully occupied, while the octahedral position has an occupancy of 42(3)%. Initial synthesis was due to hydrogen contamination of the cerium metal but has been successfully repeated using anthracene as a carbon and hydrogen source. Density of states calculations suggest that the incorporation of hydrogen stabilizes the compound with respect to the nonhydrided model. Magnetic susceptibility data show a complex magnetic ordering at 7.7 K that originates from the localized electron on the Ce 3+ in the structure. The trivalent state is also supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. Heat capacity and electrical resistivity data show that the phase transition is broad in temperature, which may be due to structural disorder. Furthermore, the large low temperature value of C/T also indicates possible heavy fermion behavior.

Superstructures and Superconductivity Linked with Pd Intercalation in Nb 2 Pd x Se 5

Single crystals of Nb 2 Pd x Se 5 have been grown covering a broad range of palladium stoichiometries, from x = 0.68 to x = 0.95 (Pd2 occupancies 0.36 and 0.90 respectively). Miscibility gaps in the Pd stoichiometry range are related to superstructures resulting from staged filling and ordering of the partially filled Pd atom site (Pd2, Wyckoff site 2a). For Pd2 near 1/2 occupancy, a superstructure based on an incommensurate occupation wave with modulation along the monoclinic b-axis is identified. Here, a superconducting dome is found for Pd2 occupancies above 0.58, with maximum Tc for Pd2 occupancy of approximately 2/3. DFT calculations for the fully and 1/2 occupied Pd2 site show that Nb 2 Pd x Se 5 can be considered an intercalation compound for Pd2 occupancy above the minimum required for structural stability.
