Current Activities and Capabilities of the Terrestrial Environment Group at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) designated Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) the center of excellence for space transportation. The Aerospace Environments and Effects (AEE) team of the Electromagnetics and Aerospace Environments Branch (EL23) in the Systems Analysis and Integration Laboratory at MSFC, supports the center of excellence designation by providing near-Earth space, deep space, planetary, and terrestrial environments expertise to projects as required. The Terrestrial Environment (TE) group within the AEE team maintains an extensive TE data base. Statistics and models derived from this data are applied to the design and development of new aerospace vehicles, as well as performance enhancement of operational vehicles such as the Space Shuttle. The TE is defined as the Earth's atmospheric environment extending from the surface to orbital insertion altitudes (approximately 90 km).

Analysis of in-flight winds for shuttle Mission STS 51-L

Television photos of smoke plumes are analyzed to estimate meridional wind shear on the space shuttle Challenger associated with the accident of Mission 51-L. Gust velocities were obtained by detailed examination of the debris trails. The shuttle exhaust trail was used to establish altitudes of significant features in the photographs. Wind data obtained from the photographs compare favorably with data obtained from a rawinsonde released 9 min after the launch of the shuttle.

Space shuttle natural environment analysis

Five major tasks are briefly outlined: development of detailed wind profile measurements for Kennedy Space Center (KSC) and Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB): development of software to construct meteorological data tapes for use in the STS Post Ascent Analysis; development of storage, access, and utilization codes for Global Cloud Cover data; development of software and meteorological data bases to establish launch delay risks at KSC and VAFB; and development of the meteorological tower 301 climatological data base at VAFB.
