Future directions for beam-foil spectroscopy

The beam-foil source has proved to be so useful for the study of atomic energy levels that it is almost trivial to propose a variety of new experiments involving new elements, higher energies, a broader wavelength range, shorter time intervals, pulsed beams, different targets, and new configurations in geometry or external fields. However, what is perhaps not so trivial is to propose experiments for which there is a specific purpose, experiments from which a novel kind of information might be expected. It is from this latter point of view that the author shall talk about experiments which seem to offer unusual opportunities to learn new things about atoms.

Polarization and collision-induced coherence in the beam-foil light source

Monatomic systems were excited by the beam-foil method in order to re-examine the possibility that a particular magnetic substate was preferentially populated. O II, Ar II and He I levels were used. The results reveal that: (1) with a tilted foil substantial polarization (up to 15%) may be achieved, (2) the polarization is due to the foil, (3) the foil induces coherence among Zeeman substates with the appearance of quantum beats among these substates and that their coherence is due to the externally applied magnetic field perpendicular to the beam direction, and (4) the angular momentum of the emitted photon is perpendicular to the ion velocity. The possibility for detecting separate effects of alignment and polarization is noted.

Coherence and its application in the beam-foil light source

The beam-foil light source is shown to be very useful in spectroscopic work. Not only the lifetimes of highly excited, multiply charged atoms can be measured in a straightforward way, but also the fine-structure and hyperfine-structure separations and the Lande factors can be obtained due to the fact that the coherent excitations are created in the impulsive beam-foil collision. The theories suggested to explain the origin of coherence are presently incomplete.

Measurement of the Lamb shift in the O-16/7+/ ion.

The energy difference between the 2S(sub 1/2) levels in the O-16(7+) ion has been determined by means of a Stark-quenching experiment to be 2215.6 plus or minus 7.5 GHz. The uncertainty is based on measured quantities only. This result is shown to be in agreement with the results of similar measurements made by other authors.

Energy levels and mean lives of Cl II to Cl VII.

Investigation of the spectra of chlorine between 500 and 2800 A using the beam-foil technique. Over 200 multiplets have been observed, many of which had not been reported earlier. A number of such transitions could be classified, and several new term values are proposed for Cl IV, Cl V, Cl VI , and Cl VII. Mean lives of various excited levels were measured for Cl II to Cl VII. The results are compared with theoretical calculations and other measurements in appropriate isoelectronic systems.
