Mid-infrared solid-state lasers and laser materials

An account is given of NASA-Langley's objectives for the development of advanced lasers and laser materials systems applicable to remote sensing in the mid-IR range. Prominent among current concerns are fiber-optic spectroscopy, eye-safe solid-state lasers for both Doppler sensing and mid-IR wavelength-generation laser pumping, and nonlinear optics generating tunable mid-IR radiation. Ho:YAG lasers are noted to exhibit intrinsic advantages for the desired applications, and are pumpable by GaAlAs laser diodes with a quantum efficiency approaching 2.

A conceptual design study for the EOS Lidar Atmospheric Sounder and Altimeter facility

A preliminary design study is presented for the Lidar Atmospheric Sounder and Altimeter (LASA), an active remote sensor for the Earth Observing System. LASA is designed to measure the global vertical distributions of aerosols, cloud top heights, atmospheric trace gases, atmospheric temperature and pressure, and the height of the PBL. The measurements are made using optical radar, differential absorption lidar, and laser altimetry. An experiment proposed for the LASA facility, the EOS Atmospheric Global Lidar Experiment (EAGLE) is described in detail. The EAGLE program is planned to determine aerosol and cloud distributions, water vapor concentrations, and temperature profiles over the troposphere and aerosol distribution over the stratosphere. The measurement techniques, receiver system, and transmitter for the EAGLE program are examined and the conceptual design of the EAGLE experiment and the LASA/EAGLE interface is outlined.

Comparison of Nd 1.06 and 1.33 micron operation in various hosts

Performances of Nd in various hosts including Nd:YAG, Nd:YLF, Nd:BEL, and Nd:Cr:GSGG were characterized and compared for operation on the nominal 1.06 micron and 1.33 micron transitions. Comparison included continuous mode operation, normal mode operation, Q-switched operation, and gain measurements. Continuous lasing of Nd:Cr:GSGG under lamp pumping is reported for what may be the first time. Characterization included operation with different mirror reflectivities to obtain the internal losses, measurement of the upper laser level lifetime, measurement of the beam quality of the lasers operating under nominally similar circumstances, and measurement of the wavelength. These measurements should provide a comparison of the various Nd hosts under similar circumstances for a wide variety of operational modes and at both wavelengths of interest.
