Plasma heating and acceleration due to Landau damping of hydromagnetic waves.

We analyze energy and momentum exchange associated with Landau damping of hydromagnetic waves, from a macroscopic viewpoint, and compare the conclusions with those of the resonant quasi-linear theory. It is found that the heating of protons and electrons is correctly given by the resonant theory, but that the momentum exchange is not correctly described by the resonant theory.

Solar wind heating.

The difference in objectives, physical assumptions, and results among the most recent detailed models aimed at understanding energy transport in the solar wind are analyzed. Models have been judged primarily by comparing their predictions against spacecraft observations near 1 AU. However, the observed values of flow speed, density, and temperature fluctuate over a wide range so that the criteria for agreement between theory and observation are necessarily somewhat subjective.

Theoretical constraints on the microscale fluctuations in the interplanetary medium.

Theoretical constraints on the character of microscale fluctuations in the solar wind are examined. The microfluctuations could be either ?discontinuities' or more smoothly varying structures. If the fluctuations are waves, they are probably mostly Alfv]en waves (or rotational discontinuities), and if they are stationary structures, they are tangential pressure balances (or tangential discontinuities). It is formally proved that a true analog of the small-amplitude MHD ?entropy wave' (or contact discontinuity) does not exist for collisionless plasmas.
