Polymer Piezoelectric Transducers for Ultrasonic NDE

Piezoelectric polymers are associated with a low noise and inherent damping that makes them very effective receivers as well as broadband transmitters for high frequencies tasks. This paper reviews polymer piezoelectric materials, the origin of their piezoelectric behavior and their applications to ultrasonic NDE.

Measuring the Thickness and Elastic Properties of Electroactive Thin-Film Polymers Using Platewave Dispersion Data

Electroactive thin-film polymers are candidate sensors and actuators materials. They are also finding significant potential in muscle mechanisms and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). In these applications, polymer thin films of thickness varying between 20 and 300 micrometers are utilized. The authors are currently studying the potential use of platewave dispersion curve measurements as an effective gauging tool for electroactive thin-film polymers.

Laser-Scan Ultrasonic/Thermographic Inspection System

Laser ultrasonic/thermographic inspection system is conceptual instrument used in nondestructive inspection of large areas of structures for subsurface defects. For example, operated in field to examine aircraft and pressure vessels for hidden cracks. System would not require contact with inspected structure or use of ultrasonic-coupling medium. Instrument obtains data in ultrasonic and thermographic C-scans over structural surfaces with contours characterized by surface normal vectors varying by angles as large as 45 degrees.

Controlling Mirror Tilt With A Bimorph Actuator

Proposed mirror-tilting actuator based on bimorph cells. Includes microprocessor determining desired direction, speed, and maximum tilt angle and converts data to control signals. Multiplexer applies control signals to circuits that apply actuation voltages to individual bimorphs. Advantages include light weight, small size, and low power. Provides controllable tilt of mirror in copy machine or optical scanner, for example.

Eddy-Current Inspection Of Tab Seals On Beverage Cans

Eddy-current inspection system monitors tab seals on beverage cans. Device inspects all cans at usual production rate of 1,500 to 2,000 cans per minute. Automated inspection of all units replaces visual inspection by microscope aided by mass spectrometry. System detects defects in real time. Sealed cans on conveyor pass near one of two coils in differential eddy-current probe. Other coil in differential eddy-current probe positioned near stationary reference can on which tab seal is known to be of acceptable quality. Signal of certain magnitude at output of probe indicates defective can, automatically ejected from conveyor.

Ultrasonic Measurement Of Elastic Constants Of Composites

Ultrasonic testing system yields data on elastic constants of matrix/fiber laminated composite material. Related to one described in "Ultrasonic System Measures Elastic Properties of Composites" (NPO-18729). Tests performed nondestructive, and involve access by ultrasonic probes to only one side of material specimen. In comparison with other available ultrasonic testing systems, this system relatively inexpensive, and based on testing technique that is simpler and rapidly yields more-accurate results.

Ultrasonic Evaluation of Thermal Degradation in Adhesive Bonds

The critical role played by adhesive bonds in lap joints is well known. A good knowledge of the mechanical properties of adhesive bonds in lap joints is a prerequisite to the design and reliable prediction of the performance of these bonded structures. Furthermore, the lap joint may be subject to high-temperature environments in service. Early detection of the degree of thermal degradation in adhesive bonds is required under these circumstances. A variety of ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques can be used to determine the thickness and the elastic moduli of adhesively bonded joints. In this paper we apply a previously developed technique based on the leaky Lamb wave (LLW) experiment to investigate the possibility of characterizing the thermal degradation of adhesive bonds in lap joints. The degradation of the adhesive bonds is determined through comparison between experimental data and theoretical calculations.

Ultrasonic System Measures Elastic Properties Of Composites

Measurements with leaky Lamb waves yield data on properties and defects of panels. System nondestructively measures elastic properties of, and defects in, panel of laminated fiber/matrix material. Ultrasonic transducers operating in pitch/catch mode excite and detect leaky Lamb waves in specimen. Elastic properties of specimen and defects within it characterized from dispersion curves of Lamb waves.

Corrosion-Indicating Pigment And Probes

Proposed hydrogen-sensitive paint for metal structures changes color at onset of corrosion, involving emission of hydrogen as result of electrochemical reactions. Pigment of suitable paint includes rhodium compound RhCl(PPh3)3, known as Wilkinson's catalyst. As coating on critical parts of such structures as bridges and aircraft, paint gives early warning of corrosion, and parts thus repaired or replaced before failing catastrophically. Reveals corrosion before it becomes visible to eye. Inspection for changes in color not ordinarily necessitate removal of structure from service, and costs less than inspection by x-ray or thermal neutron radiography, ultrasonic, eddy-current, or acoustic-emission techniques.

Nondestructive characterization of the elastic constants of fiber reinforced composites

Composite structural components may be subjected to a variety of defects resulting in a sharp reduction in their load carrying capacity or even catastrophic failure. Thus, it is extremely important to have the means to monitor the degradation suffered by critical components of a structure for safe operation during its service life. A nondestructive method based on ultrasonics has recently been developed for the quantitative evaluation of composite structural components during service. The experimental part of the technique uses a two-transducer, pitch-catch type arrangement to generate a variety of elastic waves within the specimen immersed in water. The recorded reflection data are then analyzed by means of a theoretical model to back out the relevant properties. In this paper the method is applied to determine the stiffness constants of unidirectional graphite/epoxy materials. The measurements are shown to be efficient and sufficiently accurate so that it can be used for early detection of material degradation in composite structural elements during service.
