High Precision Piezoelectric Linear Motors for Operations at Cryogenic Temperatures and Vacuum

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory evaluated the use of an electromechanical device for optically positioning a mirror system during the pre-project phase of the Pluto-Fast-Flyby (PFF) mission. The device under consideration was a piezoelectric driven linear motor functionally dependent upon a time varying electric field which induces displacements ranging from submicrons to millimeters with positioning accuracy within nanometers. Using a control package, the mirror system provides image motion compensation and mosaicking capabilities. While this device offers unique advantages, there were concerns pertaining to its operational capabilities for the PFF mission. The issues include irradiation effects and thermal concerns. A literature study indicated that irradiation effects will not significantly impact the linear motor's operational characteristics. On the other hand, thermal concerns necessitated an in depth study.

Nondestructive Determination of Heat/Fire Damage to Polymer- Matrix Composites Using Obliquely Insonified Ultrasonic Waves

Heat and fire damage to composite structures cause loss of strength that cannot be detected by current NDE methods unless physical damage occurs. Further, there is a lack of fundamental understanding of the mechanism of damage from thermal exposure of organic matrix composites to elevated temperatures. Information compiled from field reports and lab experiments increasingly suggests that there is material degradation and it is not necessarily involved with the introduction of physical defects. In recent years, various researchers examined the potential to identifying thermal degradation to organic matrix composites prior to delamination. The methods that were used include: ultrasonics, backscattered X-ray, eddy current, thermography, drift and LPF spectroscopies, acousto-ultrasonics and hardness testing. None of these methods were able to correlate NDE results with loss of mechanical properties.

Nondestructive Determination of Heat/Fire Damage to Polymer - Matrix Composites Using Obliquely Insonified Ultrasonic Waves

Reported on is the development of a quantitative NDE method, using stiffness analysis, for the determination of the degradation of composite materials that are exposed to elevated temperatures, prior to the formation of delaminations or other defects. Methods of testing describe a specimen immersed in water and subjected to ultra- sound, with reflected pulses or tone-burst (leaky Lamb wave) analysis.

NDE Elastic Properties of Fiber-Reinforced Composite Materials

Fiber-reinforced composites are increasingly replacing metallic alloys as structural materials for primary components of fracture-critical structures. This trend is a result of the growing understanding of material behavior and recognition of the desirable properties of composites. A research program was conducted on NDE methods for determining the elastic properties of composites.

Technology Transfer of Plate Wave NDE to Ultrasonic Rotary Actuation

Plate waves have been the subject of NDE research and applications. These waves, also known as guided waves of Lamb waves, are formed in two distinct modes--symmetric and antisymmetric --depending on their vibration characteristics in relation to the plate geometry. Experiments have corroborated the predictions for various plate wave modes, allowing the elastic properties of composite materials and adhesive bonded joints to be determined.

Composite Material Property Nondestructive Characterization Using Obliquely Insonified Ultrasonic Waves

The analysis of reflected ultrasonic waves induced by oblique insonification of composite materials is a powerful tool for providing informations about defects and material properties. A device was developed to manipulate a pair of transmitting and receiving transducers at vrious angles of wave incidence and propagation with the fiber orientation.

Nondestructive Characterization of Adhesive Bonds from Guided Wave Data

The critical role played by interface zones in the fracture and failure of composites and other bonded materials is well known. The existing nondestructive evaluation methods are generally not capable of yielding useful quantitative information of the strength of an interface.

Nondestructive Characterization of Adhesive Bonds from Guided Wave Data

The critical role played by adhesive bonds in the fracture and failure of composites and other bonded materials is well known. A good knowledge of the mechanical properties of these adhesion joints is a prerequisite to reliable design and reliable prediction of the performance of these bonded structures.
