Enabling novel space and terrestrial applications using transducing materials at JPL

Transducing materials are being used in many aspects of our daily life serving as actuators, sensors, displays, communications and other components of commercial mechanisms. At JPL, such materials are being used to enable novel space and terrestrial applications. This effort involves mostly the use of piezoelectric, electroactive polymers (EAP), and shape memory alloys (SMA). The piezoelectric based devices and mechanisms that were developed include ultrasonic motors, piezopump, ultrasonic/sonic drilledcorer (USDC), and ferrosource. Further, the electroactive polymers were used to demonstrate a gripper, wiper, lifter and haptic interfaces. The research and develop tasks consists of analytical modeling, experimental corroboration, material characterization as well as devices and mechanisms design, construction and demonstration.

Measurements and macro models of ionomeric polymer-metal composites (IMPC)

The Ionomeric Polymer-Metal Composites (IPMC) as a type of electroactive polymers are attractive actuation materials because of their features of large electrically induced bending, mechanical flexibility, low excitation voltage, low density, and ease of fabrication.

Analysis and simulation of the Ultrasonic/Sonic Driller/Corer (USDC)

The USDC was developed to address the challenges to the NASA objective of planetary in-situ rock sampling analysis. A computer program was developed to simulate the operation of the USDC and successfully predicted the characteristic behavior of the new device. This paper covers the theory, the analytical models and the algorithms that were developed and predicted the results.

Modeling of particle flow due to ultrasonic drilling

In-situ sampling and analysis is one of the major tasks in future NASA exploration missions. It is essential that the samples on other planets including Mars are free of contaminations from the earth. Recently, a novel drilling technology that is actuated by a piezoelectric drive mechanism was developed at it is called Ultrasonic/Sonic Driller/Corer.

Characterization of the electromechanical properties of ionomeric polymer-metal composite (IPMC)

IPMC is an electroactive polymer (EAP) that has been the subject of research and development since 1992. Its required low activation voltage and the large bending strain led to its consideration for various potential applications. However, before the benefits of IPMC can be effectively exploited for practical use, the electromechanical behavior of this group of EAP materials must be properly understood and quantified.
