Preliminary Gap Analysis of Existing IEEE 1547 and IEEE 2800 Standards Towards GFM Technology

This document describes the tests that are conducted on generic grid-forming (GFM) distributed energy resource (DER) and inverter-based resource (IBR) models to check if the performance of the model aligns respectively with the IEEE Std 1547 TM -2018 and IEEE Std 2800 TM -2022 requirements. For the IEEE Std 1547 TM -2018 requirements, specifically the tests related to volt-var requirements and frequency droop requirements are conducted. For the IEEE Std 2800 TM -2022 requirements, specifically the tests conducted are related to reactive- power-voltage control requirements, active-power-frequency response requirements, voltage disturbance ride through requirements and phase jump ride through requirements. This is an initial draft/document. There are many more tests still yet to be done to further verify if the existing standards have a gap or inadvertent barrier to GFM technology.

User-defined EMT inverter model reference performance, utility-scale [Slides]

This report investigates the response of the inverter under different terminal voltage and operating conditions. The goal is to understand the control objective of the inverter (e.g., injection of reactive current for voltage dips) based on the inverter’s response. No attempt is made to determine the exact control algorithms implemented in the inverter.

Generic Photovoltaic Inverter Model in an Electromagnetic Transients Simulator for Transmission Connected Plants

This report proposes a generic model specification of a photovoltaic inverter applied in transmission-connected plants for implementation in an electromagnetic transients simulator. The model specification contains the necessary control loops to meet the fault ride-through performance requirements in the IEEE 2800-2022 standard. The report details the implementation and example parameterization of the model in PSCAD™. Simulation results verify the model meets the performance requirements. Comparisons of the model’s response to laboratory test measurements of a commercial 2.2 MVA storage inverter show the model can reasonably predict the response of commercial equipment.
