Radio and optical observations in the fields of five unidentified X-ray sources at high latitudes

Radio observations at 610 MHz and optical plates were obtained for five fields centered on the unidentified X-ray sources 3U0042 + 32, 3U0917 + 63, 3U1443 + 43, 3U1555 + 27, and 3U1809 + 50. For the first three fields, several radio sources are found which are associated with stellar objects within or near the X-ray error boxes. A 'tailed' radio galaxy has been found in Abell 2142, and this cluster is suggested as the identification for 3U1555 + 27. Although there are no radio sources greater than 0.1 flux unit within the X-ray error boxes associated with 3U1809 + 50, a Zwicky cluster surrounding the 3U position contains two radio galaxies: one with an inverted spectrum and another with a wide-angle tail. A table of positions, intensities, and suggested optical identifications is given for the 249 radio sources detected in the five fields.

The structure of eight globular clusters

Star counts on short-exposure plates are presented for eight globular clusters. The data are given to several limiting magnitudes for each cluster. Projected radial distributions are determined from the star counts; no significant segregation is observed among the distributions to various limiting magnitudes. The structural parameters of the clusters (core radii and concentration factors) are determined from best-fitting King curves to the observed distributions. The central densities, total masses, central escape velocities, and relaxation times are also calculated. NGC 6093 (M80) and NGC 7099 (M30) have dense compact stellar cores, similar to the established globular X-ray sources. Upper limits are given for the masses of possible central black holes in the eight clusters.

Clusters of galaxies

Observational properties of clusters of galaxies and some theoretical interpretations are reviewed. The major subjects of the review include catalogs of clusters, the static properties of rich clusters, cluster dynamics, X-ray emission from clusters of galaxies, and cluster radio emission. Observed static properties discussed are: richness, classification schemes, galactic content, cD galaxies, density profiles, sizes, and the optical luminosity function. Several characteristic time scales of clusters of galaxies are examined along with mass segregation, the dynamical evolution of clusters, cluster masses, mass-to-light ratios, the missing-mass problem, and the mean galactic and cluster mass densities in the universe. The main characteristics of clusters that contain X-ray emission are summarized, emphasizing the relation of the X-ray emission to optical properties. The most important properties of cluster radio emission are outlined, the relation of this emission to the other cluster properties studied is indicated, and evidence suggesting the influence of an intracluster gas on the radio galaxies and their relativistic electrons is noted.

Statistical simulations of clusters of galaxies

By comparing observed and simulated rich clusters of galaxies, it is shown that the observed clusters actually possess physical cores. The accuracy with which core radii can be determined is found. It is also shown that the observations of density profiles of galaxies in the clusters give no significant evidence for a dynamical reason as the cause of the anomalously close resemblance found previously between such density profiles and the isothermal gas distribution.

Optical studies of 10 high galactic latitude X-ray sources

Optical studies are reported for a representative sample of 10 unidentified high galactic latitude X-ray sources that are north of declination minus 25 deg and that have 3U error boxes less than or of the order of 0.5 square degrees. The source 3U 1410-03 is identified with a peculiar emission-line spiral galaxy, NGC 5506, and a distance group 4 rich cluster of galaxies, Abell 2142, is suggested as a possible identification for 3U 1555+27. It is shown that very few of the unidentified high galactic latitude sources are quasi-stellar sources brighter than 17.5 mag, although one possible X-ray quasar, NAB 0137-01, is reported.
