Search for an axion-like particle in B β†’ K (*) a(β†’ Ξ³Ξ³) decays at Belle

We report a search for an axion-like particle a in B β†’ K (*) a decays using data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. The search is based on a 711 fb βˆ’1 data sample collected at the Ξ₯(4S) resonance energy, corresponding to a sample of 772 Γ— 10 6 Ξ₯(4S) events. In this study, we search for the decay of the axion-like particle into a pair of photons, a β†’ Ξ³Ξ³. We scan the two-photon invariant mass in the range 0.16 GeV–4.50 GeV for the K modes and 0.16 GeV–4.20 GeV for the K * modes. No significant signal is observed in any of the modes, and 90% confidence level upper limits are established on the coupling to the W boson, g aW , as a function of a mass. The limits range from 3 Γ— 10 βˆ’6 GeV βˆ’1 to 3 Γ— 10 βˆ’5 GeV βˆ’1 , improving the current constraints on g aW by a factor of two over the most stringent previous experimental results.

Charged-hadron identification at Belle II

The Belle II experiment’s ability to identify particles critically affects the sensitivity of its measurements. We describe Belle II’s algorithms for identifying charged particles and evaluate their performance in separating pions, kaons, and protons using $426\,\text {fb}^{-1}$ of data collected at the energy-asymmetric $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider SuperKEKB in 2019–2022 at center-of-mass energies at and near the mass of the $\Upsilon$ (4S).

Measurement of the 𝐷 0 →𝐾 βˆ’ β’πœ‹ + ⁒𝑒 + ⁒𝑒 βˆ’ branching fraction and search for 𝐷 0 β†’ πœ‹ + β’πœ‹ βˆ’ ⁒𝑒 + ⁒𝑒 βˆ’ and 𝐷 0 →𝐾 + ⁒𝐾 βˆ’ ⁒𝑒 + ⁒𝑒 βˆ’ decays at Belle

We present a study of the rare charm meson decays 𝐷 0 →𝐾 + ⁒𝐾 βˆ’ ⁒𝑒 + ⁒𝑒 βˆ’ , πœ‹ + β’πœ‹ βˆ’ ⁒𝑒 + ⁒𝑒 βˆ’ , and 𝐾 βˆ’ β’πœ‹ + ⁒𝑒 + ⁒𝑒 βˆ’ using a 942 fb βˆ’1 dataset collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy 𝑒 + ⁒𝑒 βˆ’ collider. The branching fraction for decay 𝐷 0 β†’ 𝐾 βˆ’ β’πœ‹ + ⁒𝑒 + ⁒𝑒 βˆ’ is measured to be (39.6 Β± 4.5 (stat) Β± 2.9 (syst)) Γ— 10 βˆ’7 , with the dielectron mass in the 𝜌/πœ” mass region 675 < π‘š 𝑒⁒𝑒 < 875 MeV/⁒𝑐 2 . We also search for 𝐷 0 β†’ β„Ž βˆ’ β‘β„Ž (β€²)+ ⁑𝑒 + ⁒𝑒 βˆ’ (β„Ž (β€²) = 𝐾, πœ‹) decays with the dielectron mass near the πœ‚ and πœ™ resonances, and away from these resonances for the 𝐾 + ⁒𝐾 βˆ’ ⁒𝑒 + ⁒𝑒 βˆ’ and πœ‹ + β’πœ‹ βˆ’ ⁒𝑒 + ⁒𝑒 βˆ’ modes. Observation of the decays 𝐡 + β†’ Ξ£ 𝑐 ⁒(2455) ++ $\bar{Ξ}^-_c$ and 𝐡 0 β†’ Ξ£ 𝑐 ⁒(2455) 0⁒ $\bar{Ξ}^0_𝑐$

We report the first observation of the two-body baryonic decays 𝐡 + β†’ Ξ£ 𝑐 ⁒(2455) ++ $\bar{Ξ}^-_c$ and 𝐡 0 β†’ Ξ£ 𝑐 ⁒(2455) 0⁒ $\bar{Ξ}^0_𝑐$ with significances of 7.3⁒𝜎 and 6.2⁒𝜎, respectively, including statistical and systematic uncertainties. The branching fractions are measured to be ℬ⁑(𝐡 + β†’ Ξ£ 𝑐 ⁒(2455) ++ $\bar{Ξ}^-_c$) = (5.74 Β± 1.11 Β± 0.4⁒2$^{+2.47}_{βˆ’1.53}$) Γ—10 βˆ’4 and ℬ⁑(𝐡 0 β†’ Ξ£ 𝑐 ⁒(2455) 0⁒ $\bar{Ξ}^0_𝑐$) = (4.83 Β± 1.12 Β± 0.3⁒7$^{+0.72}_{βˆ’0.60}$) Γ—10 βˆ’4 . The first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, while the third ones arise from the absolute branching fractions of $\bar{Ξ}^-_c$ or $\bar{Ξ}^0_𝑐$ decays. The data samples used for this analysis have integrated luminosities of 711 fb βˆ’1 and 365 fb βˆ’1 , and were collected at the ϒ⁑(4⁒𝑆) resonance by the Belle and Belle II detectors operating at the KEKB and SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy 𝑒 + ⁒𝑒 βˆ’ colliders, respectively.

Test of lepton flavor universality with measurements of 𝑅⁑(𝐷 + ) and 𝑅⁑(𝐷* + ) using semileptonic 𝐡 tagging at the Belle II experiment

We report measurements of the ratios of branching fractions ℛ⁑(𝐷 (*)+ ) = ℬ⁑($\bar{𝐡}$ 0 β†’ 𝐷 (*)+ ⁒𝜏 βˆ’β’ $\bar{𝜈}$ 𝜏 )/ℬ⁑($\bar{𝐡}$ 0 β†’ 𝐷 (*)+ ⁒ℓ βˆ’ $\bar{𝜈}$ β„“ ), where β„“ denotes either an electron or a muon. These ratios test the universality of the charged-current weak interaction. The results are based on a 365 fb βˆ’1 data sample collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB 𝑒 + ⁒𝑒 βˆ’ collider, which operates at a center-of-mass energy corresponding to the ϒ⁑(4⁒𝑆) resonance, just above the threshold for $𝐡\bar{𝐡}$ production. Signal candidates are reconstructed by selecting events in which the companion 𝐡 meson from the ϒ⁑(4⁒𝑆) β†’ $𝐡\bar{𝐡}$ decay is identified in semileptonic modes. The 𝜏 lepton is reconstructed via its leptonic decays. We obtain ℛ⁑(𝐷 + ) = 0.418$^{+0.075}_{βˆ’0.073}$⁒(stat)$^{+0.049}_{βˆ’0.056}$⁒(syst) and ℛ⁑(𝐷 *+ ) = 0.306$^{+0.035}_{βˆ’0.033}$⁒(stat)$^{+0.016}_{βˆ’0.018⁒}$(syst), which are consistent with world average values. Accounting for the correlation between them, these values differ from the Standard Model expectation by a collective significance of 1.7 standard deviations.

Design and commissioning of readout electronics for a $K$$^{0}_{L}$ and $ΞΌ$ detector at the Belle II experiment

The K-long and muon detector (KLM) constitutes the outer-most volume of the Belle II spectrometer at the interaction region of the SuperKEKB collider in Tsukuba, Japan. The KLM detector was partially upgraded since the Belle experiment by replacing many of its resistive-plate chambers with scintillators containing wavelength-shifting fibers and instrumenting it with silicon photomultipliers. Here, we describe the readout electronics, firmware, and software created to control and acquire data from the scintillators and resistive-plate chambers.

Measurement of the time-integrated 𝐢⁒𝑃 asymmetry in 𝐷 0 β†’ 𝐾$^{0}_{S}$𝐾$^{0}_{S}$ decays using opposite-side flavor tagging at Belle and Belle II

We measure the time-integrated 𝐢⁒𝑃 asymmetry in 𝐷 0 β†’ 𝐾$^{0}_{S}$𝐾$^{0}_{S}$ decays reconstructed in 𝑒 + ⁒𝑒 βˆ’ β†’ $c\bar{c}$ events collected by the Belle and Belle II experiments. The corresponding data samples have integrated luminosities of 980 and 428 fb βˆ’1 , respectively. To infer the flavor of the 𝐷 0 meson, we exploit the correlation between the flavor of the reconstructed decay and the electric charges of particles reconstructed in the rest of the 𝑒 + ⁒𝑒 βˆ’ β†’ $c\bar{c}$ event. This results in a sample which is independent from any other previously used at Belle or Belle II. The result, 𝐴 𝐢⁒𝑃 ⁑(𝐷 0 β†’ 𝐾$^{0}_{S}$𝐾$^{0}_{S}$)=(1.3Β±2.0Β±0.2)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, is consistent with previous determinations and with 𝐢⁒𝑃 symmetry.

Measurement of the branching fraction of Ξ› + 𝑐 →𝑝⁒𝐾 0 𝑆⁒ πœ‹ 0 at Belle

We report a precise measurement of the ratio of branching fractions ℬ⁑(Ξ›$^+_𝑐$ β†’ 𝑝⁒𝐾$^0_𝑆$β’πœ‹ 0 )/ℬ⁑(Ξ›$^+_𝑐$ β†’ 𝑝⁒𝐾 βˆ’ β’πœ‹ + ) using 980 fb βˆ’1 of 𝑒 + ⁒𝑒 βˆ’ data from the Belle experiment. We obtain a value of ℬ⁑(Ξ›$^+_𝑐$ β†’ 𝑝⁒𝐾$^0_𝑆$β’πœ‹ 0 )/ℬ⁑(Ξ›$^+_𝑐$ β†’ 𝑝⁒𝐾 βˆ’ β’πœ‹ + ) =0.339 Β±0.002 Β±0.009, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. This Belle result is consistent with the previous measurement from the CLEO experiment but has a fivefold improvement in precision. By combining our result with the world average ℬ⁑(Ξ›$^+_𝑐$ β†’ 𝑝⁒𝐾 βˆ’ β’πœ‹ + ), we obtain the absolute branching fraction ℬ⁑(Ξ›$^+_𝑐$ β†’ 𝑝⁒𝐾$^0_𝑆$β’πœ‹ 0 ) =(2.12 Β± 0.01 Β±0.05 Β±0.10)%, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and the uncertainty in the absolute branching fraction scale ℬ⁑(Ξ›$^+_𝑐$ β†’ 𝑝⁒𝐾 βˆ’ β’πœ‹ + ), respectively. This measurement can shed light on hadronic decay mechanisms in charmed baryon decays.

Production cross sections of light and charmed mesons in 𝑒 + ⁒𝑒 βˆ’ annihilation near 10.58 GeV

We report measurements of production cross sections for 𝜌 + , 𝜌 0 , πœ”, 𝐾* + , 𝐾* 0 , πœ™, πœ‚, 𝐾$^0_𝑆$, 𝑓 0 ⁑(980), 𝐷 + , 𝐷 0 , 𝐷$^+_𝑠$, 𝐷* + , 𝐷* 0 , and 𝐷*$^+_𝑠$ in 𝑒 + ⁒𝑒 βˆ’ collisions at a center-of-mass energy near 10.58 GeV. The data were recorded by the Belle experiment, consisting of 571 fb βˆ’1 at 10.58 GeV and 74 fb βˆ’1 at 10.52 GeV. Production cross sections are extracted as a function of the fractional hadron momentum π‘₯ 𝑝 . The measurements are compared to pythia Monte Carlo generator predictions with various fragmentation settings, including those that have increased fragmentation into vector mesons over pseudoscalar mesons. The cross sections measured for light hadrons are consistent with no additional increase of vector over pseudoscalar mesons. The charmed-meson cross sections are compared to earlier measurementsβ€”when availableβ€”including older Belle results, which they supersede. They are in agreement before application of an improved initial-state radiation correction procedure that causes slight changes in their π‘₯ 𝑝 shapes.

Test of lepton flavor universality with a measurement of R ( D * ) using hadronic B tagging at the Belle II experiment

The ratio of branching fractions R ( D * ) = B ( B Β― β†’ D * Ο„ βˆ’ Ξ½ Β― Ο„ ) / B ( B Β― β†’ D * β„“ βˆ’ Ξ½ Β― β„“ ) , where β„“ is an electron or muon, is measured using a Belle II data sample with an integrated luminosity of 189 fb βˆ’ 1 at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e + e βˆ’ collider. Data is collected at the Ο’ ( 4 S ) resonance, and one B meson in the Ο’ ( 4 S ) β†’ B B Β― decay is fully reconstructed in hadronic decay modes. The accompanying signal B meson is reconstructed as B Β― β†’ D * Ο„ βˆ’ Ξ½ Β― Ο„ using leptonic Ο„ decays. The normalization decay, B Β― β†’ D * β„“ βˆ’ Ξ½ Β― β„“ , produces the same observable final-state particles. The ratio of branching fractions is extracted in a simultaneous fit to two signal-discriminating variables in both channels and yields R ( D * ) = 0.262 βˆ’ 0.039 + 0.041 ( stat ) βˆ’ 0.032 + 0.035 ( syst ) . Measurement of Angular Coefficients of B Β― β†’ D * β„“ Ξ½ Β― β„“ : Implications for | V c b | and Tests of Lepton Flavor Universality

Using recent lattice QCD calculations for the hadronic form factors, we find | V cb | = ( 40.7 Β± 0.7 ) Γ— 10 βˆ’ 3 using the Boyd-Grinstein-Lebed parametrization, compatible with determinations from inclusive semileptonic decays.
