On simultaneous choice of dynamic control and measurement strategies for stochastic systems.

Consideration of stochastic optimal control problems in which the measurement equation contains a control variable. Conditions under which it is possible to separately optimize the dynamic and measurement controls are studied, with particular emphasis on showing (by counterexample) that certain results already available for the linear-Gaussian-quadratic case do not extend to more general problems. Conditions under which the extension is possible are discussed.

On the application of deterministic optimization methods to stochastic control problems.

A technique is presented by which one can apply the Minimum Principle of Pontryagin to stochastic optimal control problems formulated around linear systems with Gaussian noises and general cost criteria. Using this technique, the stochastic nature of the problem is suppressed but for two expectation operations, the optimization being essentially deterministic. The technique is applied to systems with quadratic and non-quadratic costs to illustrate its use.

On stochastic control system design methods for weakly coupled large scale linear systems.

This paper considers the problem of decentralized control of two weakly coupled linear stochastic systems, using quadratic performance indices. The basic idea is to have each controller control independently his own system, based upon noisy measurements of his own output. To compensate for the effects of weak coupling upon the resultant performance, fake white plant noise is introduced to each system. The appropriate intensity of the fake plant noise is obtained through the solution of an off-line deterministic matrix optimal control problem. The effects of this design method upon the overall coupled system performance are analyzed as a function of the degree of intersystem coupling.

On the adaptive control of linear systems using the open-loop-feedback-optimal approach.

This paper considers the suboptimal stochastic control of linear discrete-time dynamical systems with unknown or stochastically varying parameters. The suboptimal scheme is based upon the use of the open-loop-feedback-optimal (O.L.F.O.) method. The state and parameter estimates are generated by an extended Kalman filter algorithm. Numerical results for first order systems are presented.

An algorithm for terminal air traffic control

An area-navigation method for automatic control of aircraft arriving in a random fashion from the en-route centers to the near terminal area is proposed. Control is exercised by a ground computer that sequences and schedules the aircraft. Altitude segregation is used to separate aircraft in velocity classes. Merging of all aircraft occurs near the outer marker. The merging region is designed so that no near misses will occur if the aircraft follow the assigned trajectories.

The role and use of the stochastic linear-quadratic-Gaussian problem in control system design.

The role of the linear-quadratic stochastic control problem in engineering design is reviewed in tutorial fashion. The design approach is motivated by considering the control of a nonlinear uncertain plant about a desired input-output response. It is demonstrated how a design philosophy based on (1) deterministic perturbation control, (2) stochastic state estimation, and (3) linearized stochastic control leads to an overall closed-loop control system. The emphasis of the paper is on the philosophy of the design process, the modeling issue, and the formulation of the problem; the results are given for the sake of completeness, but no proofs are included. The systematic off-line nature of the design process is stressed throughout.

Optimal limited state variable feedback controllers for linear systems.

Optimized static and dynamic linear system compensator designs with a priori fixed dimensions are discussed. Expressions are derived to determine the parameters of these designs, including the fixed-gain output feedback, the time-varying output feedback, and time-invariant compensation. A relevant deterministic off-line optimization problem is formulated, and the properties of a solution to the problem are analyzed. A unified design philosophy for limited state-variable control problems of essentially deterministic systems is developed. The philosophy incorporates design constraints, a careful selection of performance criteria, and interpretation of the results.
