Lynx x-ray microcalorimeter

Lynx is an x-ray telescope, one of four large satellite mission concepts currently being studied by NASA to be a flagship mission. One of Lynx’s three instruments is an imaging spectrometer called the Lynx x-ray microcalorimeter (LXM), an x-ray microcalorimeter behind an x-ray optic with an angular resolution of 0.5 arc sec and ∼2 sq. m of area at 1 keV. The LXM will provide unparalleled diagnostics of distant extended structures and, in particular, will allow the detailed study of the role of cosmic feedback in the evolution of the Universe. We discuss the baseline design of LXM and some parallel approaches for some of the key technologies. The baseline sensor technology uses transition-edge sensors, but we also consider an alternative approach using metallic magnetic calorimeters. We discuss the requirements for the instrument, the pixel layout, and the baseline readout design, which uses microwave superconducting quantum interference devices and high-electron mobility transistor amplifiers and the cryogenic cooling requirements and strategy for meeting these requirements. For each of these technologies, we discuss the current technology readiness level and our strategy for advancing them to be ready for flight. We also describe the current system design, including the block diagram, and our estimate for the mass, power, and data rate of the instrument.

Large-Scale Magnetic Microcalorimeter: Modeling and Multiplexing

We will present performance predictions for a large-scale magnetic microcalorimeter detector array intended for a potential future X-ray astrophysics mission. The focal plane comprises three distinct array designs, necessitating over 100,000 pixels to meet the scientific objectives. Our presentation will describe the results of numerical modeling aimed at estimating the energy resolution and detector responses for each array. Additionally, we will discuss the application of microwave multiplexing technology for the comprehensive readout of the entire sensor array.

Thermal links and position resolution in multi-absorber hydra microcalorimeters

The “hydra” style of position-sensitive, multi-absorber microcalorimeter is used in some imaging x-ray spectroscopy detector arrays to thermally multiplex multiple pixels to one sensor, thereby enabling readout of larger arrays for a given number of sensor readout channels. We describe the benefit of choosing a set of thermal conductance values for the links between absorbers and sensor such that the probability of misidentifying the absorber hit location is minimized while still achieving a specified x-ray energy resolution for all pixels. We illustrate the benefit of this approach as applied in our current prototype 25-pixel hydra magnetic microcalorimeter arrays for the Lynx x-ray astrophysics mission concept.
