Medium-resolution far-ultraviolet spectroscopy of PKS 2155-304

Using the Berkeley spectrometer of the Orbiting Retrievable Far and Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrometer (ORFEUS) we observed the 87-117 nm UV spectrum of the BL Lac object PKS 2155-304 with about 0.5 A resolution. In addition to the expected interstellar lines we detected higher quantum number counterparts of the intergalactic Lyman alpha lines discovered earlier with IUE and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in the direction of PKS 2155-304. The Lyman discontinuities indicate for three of the redshifted clouds a combined H I column density of 2-5 x 10(exp 16)/sq cm, while the column density for another cloud appears to be well below 5 x 10(exp 15)/sq cm. No siginificant O VI absorption in the galactic halo toward PKS 2155-304 could be detected from our data. Assuming that saturation effects are negligible for these weak features, we obtain for the O VI column density toward PKS 2155-304 a 3 sigma upper limit of 2.7 x 10(exp 14)/sq cm.

Far and extreme ultraviolet astronomy with ORFEUS

ORFEUS (Orbiting and Retrievable Far and Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrometer) is a 1 m normal incidence telescope for spectroscopic investigations of cosmic sources in the far and extreme ultraviolet spectral range. The instrument will be integrated into the freeflyer platform ASTRO-SPAS. ORFEUS-SPAS is scheduled with STS ENDEAVOUR in September 1992. We describe the telescope with its two spectrometer and their capabilities i.e., spectral range, resolution and overall sensitivity. The main classes of objects to be observed with the instrument are discussed and two examples of simulated spectra for the white dwarf HZ43 and an O9-star in LMC are shown.

Pre-main sequence stars

Observations of premain-sequence (PMS) stars obtained with the IUE satellite since its launch in 1978 are reviewed. The major types of PMS stars are listed and briefly characterized: T Tau stars, Herbig Ae stars, FU Ori objects, weak-emission PMS stars, and Herbig-Haro objects. The IUE data for a catalog of PMS objects are then presented in a table, graphs, and sample spectra and described in detail. Topics addressed include general spectral profiles, the Mg II h and k lines, the FUV emission lines, the UV continuum, and the impact of the IUE on astrophysical models of PMS stars. The need for observations with higher spectral resolution and much greater sensitivity is indicated, and the ability of the Hubble Space Telescope High-Resolution Spectrograph and the proposed NASA/ESA Lyman FUV Spectroscopic Explorer to meet these requirements is considered.
