Pronghorn Theory Manual

This manual is intended to provide a thorough description of the governing equations; the relations used for material, heat transfer, and fluid flow parameters; and the numerical method utilized in Pronghorn. Detailed derivations of the governing equations are given, beginning from first principles in order to be as explicit as possible about assumptions made along the way and guide any future methods extensions. Additional explanatory or tangential information that is not required for detailed understanding of the governing equations used in Pronghorn is shown in gray boxes in the text. The convention used in this document is to represent all class names (or file names) in typewriter font.

Sockeye Theory Manual

Sockeye is an application that models heat pipe performance, based on the MOOSE framework. Its primary focus is on liquid-metal heat pipes with annular screen or porous wick structures, with the intended application being the simulation of heat pipes in microreactors. The purpose of this capability is to evaluate and understand heat pipe performance under different conditions. Furthermore, this heat pipe performance is intended to be coupled to multiphysics applications for modeling microreactors, so that the effects of heat pipe performance on the larger reactor system can be simulated.

Power Generation Cycle with RELAP-7

Balance of plant of a High-Temperature gas-cooled Reactor – Pebble bed Module (HTR-PM) is modeled using RELAP-7. The model includes the primary helium loop where the heat produced by the core is transferred to a helical-coil steam generator and the secondary loop where super-heated steam is fed to a turbine to extract power. The steam is then condensed to subcooled water and pumped back into the steam generator. Results demonstrate that RELAP-7 has the capability to model different regimes encountered in two-phase flow with wall boiling, superheated steam, subcooled liquid and condensation. RELAP-7 also has the capability of modeling different fluids with their own specific models in a very flexible way, without any code change. This also demonstrates the capability of modeling the transfer of fission power into electrical power.

Sockeye: A 1-D Heat Pipe Modeling Tool

Sockeye is a 1-D MOOSE-based application for modeling heat pipes. Sockeye is aimed at modeling heat pipes with annular wick and contains two-phase fluid property packages for sodium and potassium working fluids. Sockeye adapts the two-phase flow model from RELAP-7 to the simulation of heat pipes, by accounting for the capillary pressure in pressure relaxation terms. Additionally, a simple, aggregate heat transfer model exists for transitioning from temperatures below the melting temperature of the working fluid. Results are presented for an example test problem, and some future work is discussed.

Sockeye Heat Pipe Code Theory Development: Based on the 7-Equation, Two-Phase Flow Model of RELAP-7

Sockeye is a MOOSE-based computer code designed to simulate the thermal-hydraulic two-phase flows of heat pipes in a nuclear micro-reactor. For this application, a significantly modified version of the fully non-equilibrium, compressible, 7-equation, two-phase flow model of RELAP-7 was developed. This summary report documents the significant points of this model development.
