Mangala Valles as a Potential Landing Site for the Mars Surveyor 2001 Lander

Mangala Valles is an outflow channel in the Memnonia region of Mars. Although its origin is still under debate, most researchers believe they represent some form of catastrophic flood system which occurred early in the evolutionary history of Mars. The scientific objective of the Mars Surveyor Program 2001 (MSP 01) landed mission is to examine the ancient climatic and geologic history of Mars; to characterized surface materials with respect to elemental and mineral composition of rock and soils; to identify the role water may have played with respect to evolutionary history of the surface; to look for samples which may contain possible evidence of ancient life; and to collect and store unaltered samples which may be eventually returned to Earth during a later mission (MSP 05 - 2005). As with the Mars Pathfinder lander, the landing site will depend on several engineering constraints. Preliminary engineering constraints for MSP 01 landing site is that the landing site lies with 30 N and -15 S of the equator (due to solar power limitations) and below 2 km elevation. Both the scientific objectives and the engineering constraints can be accommodated with a Mangala Valles landing site.

Solar Wind-Magnetosphere Coupling During an Isolated Substorm Event: A Multispacecraft ISTP Study

Multispacecraft data from the upstream solar wind, polar cusp, and inner magnetotail are used to show that the polar ionosphere responds within a few minutes to a southward IMF turning, whereas the inner tail signatures are visible within ten min from the southward turning. Comparison of two subsequent substorm onsets, one during southward and the other during northward IMF, demonstrates the dependence of the expansion phase characteristics on the external driving conditions. Both onsets are shown to have initiated in the midtail, with signatures in the inner tail and auroral oval following a few minutes later.

Stimulation of plasma waves by electron guns on the ISEE-1 satellite

The results of the ISEE-1 satellite experiment relating to observations of the waves stimulated during electron injections, when the spacecraft is passing through the magnetosphere, the magnetosheath, and the solar wind, are discussed. It is shown that the injection of an electron beam current of the order of 10 to 60 microamperes with energies ranging from 0 to 40 eV produces enhancements in the electric wave spectrum. An attempt has been made to identify the low-frequency electrostatic wave observed below the ion plasma frequency as an ion acoustic mode, although the excitation mechanism is not clear. A coupling mechanism between the electron plasma mode and streaming electrons with energies higher than the thermal speed of the cold electron population has been proposed to explain the observations above the electron plasma frequency.

Use of MAGSAT anomaly data for crustal structure and mineral resources in the US midcontinent

Magnetic fields were measured from October 1979 until June 1980 using the satellite. The processed magnetic data yield long wavelength anomalies that arise from crustal and upper mantle sources. Analysis techniques are being developed to help interpret the structure and character of the lithosphere in central North America. The region includes the Midcontinent Gravity Anomaly peleorift zone and the New Madrid rift/seismic zone, both of which are of plaeotectonic and neotectonic interest. Preliminary analysis of the initial MAGSAT data combined with correlative geological and geophysical data shows the utility of the satellite data for regional crustal and basement study.

Far-ultraviolet studies. III - A search for light scattered at large angles by dust

The Apollo 17 far-ultraviolet spectrometer was used during trans-earth coast to measure the brightness of two regions at moderate galactic latitudes. The signal obtained can be entirely accounted for by light from stars in the field of view, with no contribution from galactic-plane starlight scattered off interstellar dust. It is concluded that the interstellar grains are extremely poor large-angle scatterers in the far-ultraviolet.

The stereoisomeric composition of phytanyl chains in lipids of Dead Sea sediments

Lipid extracts from five recent Dead Sea sediments were analyzed for isoprenoid compounds and the following were isolated: free and phospholipid-bound di-O-phytanylglycerol, free phytanol and free and esterified phytanic acid. The phytanyl groups of the diether and the free phytanol were oxidized to the corresponding phytanic acid; the stereoisomeric composition of the derived phytanic acids as well as of the ester-bound phytanic acid was determined by open-tubular gas-liquid chromatography of the corresponding methyl esters on butanediolsuccinate polyester. Only the 3R, 7R, 11R-isomer of phytanic acid was detected in each of the phytanate samples, indicating that these phytanyl chains in the Dead Sea sediments are most likely derived from extremely halophilic bacteria rather than from phytol of chlorophyll origin. These findings also provide further evidence that the mixtures of RRR and SRR-phytanic acids previously isolated from organic-rich shales were most likely derived from the phytyl chain in chlorophyll.

Metal abundance in the Praesepe and Hyades clusters

Calcium K-line photometry is reported for 27 A-type stars in the Praesepe cluster, and the data obtained are compared with previous K-line observations of Hyades stars. It is found that calcium and other metals are generally overabundant in Praesepe relative to field stars and that there is a considerable scatter in metal-abundance indices. Comparison with the Hyades results indicates that the Praesepe stars are as metal-enriched as the Hyades stars. These results are taken as evidence favoring Eggen's (1960) proposal that the Hyades and Praesepe clusters should be regarded as a single group having, on the average, about a factor-of-two higher metal abundance than solar-neighborhood field stars as well as a high internal dispersion in metal-line strengths. The questions of where and how the Praesepe-Hyades stars acquired their high average metal abundances, K-line strengths, and associated dispersions are briefly considered.

Application of LANDSAT-2 data to the implementation and enforcement of the Pennsylvania Surface Mining Conservation and Reclamation Act

The author has identified the following significant results. Evaluation of LANDSAT imagery indicates severe limitations in its utility for surface mine land studies. Image stripping resulting from unequal detector response on satellite degrades the image quality to the extent that images of scales larger than 1:125,000 are of limited value for manual interpretation. Computer processing of LANDSAT data to improve image quality is essential; the removal of scanline stripping and enhancement of mine land reflectance data combined with color composite printing permits useful photographic enlargements to approximately 1:60,000.

Copernicus observations of Nova Cygni 1975

Near-ultraviolet radiation from Nova Cygni 1975 was detected by the Copernicus satellite on five occasions from 1975 September 1 to 1975 September 9. The nova was not seen in the UV after this date. The principal result was the observation of a broad emission feature from the Mg II doublet at 2800 A. The absence of strong UV radiation at shorter wavelengths suggests that these lines are produced by collisional excitation in the outer layers of an expanding shell with electron temperature of approximately 4000 K. The absence of observed emission lines from highly ionized species indicates that the amount of material with log T between 4.4 and 5.7 is less than 0.001 times that which produces the Mg II emission. The continuum flux in the near-UV decreased as the nova evolved, showing that the total luminosity decreased as the nova faded in the visible.

Comparative utility of LANDSAT-1 and Skylab data for coastal wetland mapping and ecological studies

Skylab 190-A photography and LANDSAT-1 analog data have been analyzed to determine coastal wetland mapping potential as a near term substitute for aircraft data and as a long term monitoring tool. The level of detail and accuracy of each was compared. Skylab data provides more accurate classification of wetland types, better delineation of freshwater marshes and more detailed analysis of drainage patterns. LANDSAT-1 analog data is useful for general classification, boundary definition and monitoring of human impact in wetlands.

A detector for high frequency modulation in auroral particle fluxes

A high time resolution electron detector has been developed for use in sounding rocket studies of the aurora. The detector is used to look for particle bunching in the range 50 kHz-10 MHz. The design uses an electron multiplier and an onboard frequency spectrum analyzer. By using the onboard analyzer, the data can be transmitted back to ground on a single 93-kHz voltage-controlled oscillator. The detector covers the 50 kHz-10 MHz range six times per second and detects modulation on the order of a new percent of the total electron flux. Spectra are presented for a flight over an auroral arc.

Photographic techniques for enhancing ERTS MSS data for geologic information

Satellite multispectral black-and-white photographic negatives of Luna County, New Mexico, obtained by ERTS on 15 August and 2 September 1973, were precisely reprocessed into positive images and analyzed in an additive color viewer. In addition, an isoluminous (uniform brightness) color rendition of the image was constructed. The isoluminous technique emphasizes subtle differences between multispectral bands by greatly enhancing the color of the superimposed composite of all bands and eliminating the effects of brightness caused by sloping terrain. Basaltic lava flows were more accurately displayed in the precision processed multispectral additive color ERTS renditions than on existing state geological maps. Malpais lava flows and small basaltic occurrences not appearing on existing geological maps were identified in ERTS multispectral color images.
