Considerations for the design of an onboard air traffic situation display

The basic concept of remoting information to the cockpit is used to design and develop a computerized airborne traffic situation display device that automatically selects and presents segments of a controller's scope to the aircraft pilot via a narrow band digital data link. These data are integrated with aircraft heading and navigation information to provide a display useful in congested air space. The display can include alphanumerical symbols, air route maps, and controller instructions.

A study of space shuttle structural integrity test and assessment. Part 1

The ultrasonics technique for assessing the structural integrity of the primary surface of the space shuttle vehicles is discussed and evaluated. Analysis was made of transducers, transducer coupling test structure fabrication, flaws, and ultrasonic testing. Graphs of microphone response curves from the initial noise tests, accelerometer response curves from the final noise tests, and microphone curves from the final noise tests are included along with a glossary, bibliography, and results.

Prediction of the effects of thermal stratification on pressure and temperature response of the Apollo supercritical oxygen tank

A semiempirical design-oriented model has been developed for the prediction of the effects of thermal stratification on tank pressure and heater temperature response for the Apollo supercritical oxygen tank. The heat transfer formulation describes laminar free convection at low-g and takes into account the radiation and conduction processes occurring in the tank. The nonequilibrium thermodynamic behavior of the system due to localized heating of the stored fluid is represented by the characteristics of a discrete number of fluid regions and thermal nodes. Solutions to the time dependent variable fluid property problem are obtained through the use of a reference temperature procedure. A criterion which establishes the reference temperature as a function of the fluid density ratio is derived. The analytical results are compared with the flight data.

Methods of assessing structural integrity for space shuttle vehicles

A detailed description and evaluation of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods are given which have application to space shuttle vehicles. Appropriate NDE design data is presented in twelve specifications in an appendix. Recommendations for NDE development work for the space shuttle program are presented.
