Buckling loads of stiffened panels subjected to combined longitudinal compression and shear: Results obtained with PASCO, EAL, and STAGS computer programs

Buckling analyses used in PASCO are summarized with emphasis placed on the shear buckling analyses. The PASCO buckling analyses include the basic VIPASA analysis, which is essentially exact for longitudinal and transverse loads, and a smeared stiffener solution, which treats a stiffened panel as an orthotropic plate. Buckling results are then presented for seven stiffened panels loaded by combinations of longitudinal compression and shear. The buckling results were obtained with the PASCO, EAL, and STAGS computer programs. The EAL and STAGS solutions were obtained with a fine finite element mesh and are very accurate. These finite element solutions together with the PASCO results for pure longitudinal compression provide benchmark calculations to evaluate other analysis procedures.

Vibration and buckling of general periodic lattice structures

A method is presented for vibration and buckling analysis of arbitrary lattice structures having repetitive geometry in any combination of coordinate directions. The approach is based on exact member theory for representing the stiffness of an individual member subject to axial load, and in the case of vibration, undergoing harmonic oscillation. The method is an extension of previous work that was limited to specific geometries. The resulting eigenvalue problem is of the size associated with the repeating element of the structure. A computer program has been developed incorporating the theory and results are given for vibration of rectangular platforms and a large antenna structure having rotational symmetry. Buckling and vibration results for cable-stiffened rings are also given.

Current research on shear buckling and thermal loads with PASCO - Panel analysis and sizing code

The stiffened composite structural panel analysis and sizing code designated 'PASCO' encompasses both the generality required for the exploitation of composite materials' design flexibility and an accurate buckling analysis for the detection of complex buckling modes. PASCO can accordingly design for buckling, frequency, material strength, and panel stiffness requirements. Attention is given to an additional thermal loading design capability. Design studies illustrate the importance of the multiple load condition capability when thermal loads are present.

Buckling and vibration of any prismatic assembly of shear and compression loaded anisotropic plates with an arbitrary supporting structure

The computer program designated 'VIPASA', which accurately treats buckling and vibration in prismatic plate assemblies with a response that varies sinusoidally in the longitudinal direction, has been found to be limited by the production of an in-plane shear loading of component plates that produces skewed mode shapes. These do not conform to desired support conditions. This problem is presently overcome through a coupling of the VIPASA stiffness matrices for different wavelength responses by means of the Lagrangian Multipliers method. The theory extends to supports at arbitrary locations, and even to the support provided by any elastic structure. The generality and capabilities of VIPASA have been retained in the computer program designated 'VICON', which permits constraints and a supporting structure consisting of any number of transverse beam columns.

Buckling of imperfect periodic lattice structures

A simplified buckling analysis is presented for a family of periodic lattice structures such as those proposed for large space structures. A transcendental 6 x 6 matrix of eigenvalues is shown to be sufficient for modeling buckling behavior because member stiffnesses are based on an exact solution of the beam-column equation. Exact stiffnesses are derived for a curved member, thus allowing modeling of imperfect lattice structures. Comparisons of predictions of the lattice model with those available from shell and beam theory underscore the inaccuracies introduced by treating the lattice structure as a continuum. Sample calculations are provided for an isogrid cylinder and a three element double-laced truss.

Modeling of Large Latticed Surfaces

GEOMLLS program determines dimensions and coordinates of flat segmented triangular surfaces that approximate spherical and paraboloidal surfaces of revolution, where vertexes of triangles lie on true surface. GEOMLLS calculates complete geometry of segmented surface and quantities that measure surface accuracy, such as maximum deviation and root-mean-square deviation from true surface.

Nonlinear and tangent stiffness of imperfect beam columns

A curved member under axial load is analyzed using beam column theory to determine nonlinear response and the tangent stiffness associated with small displacements from the nonlinear state. Such a result is suitable for incorporation into a general nonlinear analysis using a corotational coordinate system to describe the rigid body type motion of individual members. The method is applied to buckling problems. Several examples are given to show the accuracy of the method.

Buckling loads for stiffened panels subjected to combined longitudinal compression and shear loadings: Results obtained with PASCO, EAL, and STAGS computer

The shear buckling analyses used in PASCO are summarized. The PASCO analyses include the basic VIPASA analysis, which is essentially exact for longitudinal and transverse loads, and a smeared orthotropic solution which was added to alleviate a shortcoming in the VIPASA analysis. Buckling results are presented for six stiffened panels loaded by combinations of longitudinal compression and shear. The buckling results were obtained with the PASCO, EAL, and STAGS computer programs. The EAL and STAGS solutions were obtained with a fine finite element mesh and provide calculations for the entire range of combinations of longitudinal compression and shear loadings.

Current research on shear buckling and thermal loads with PASCO: Panel Analysis and Sizing Code

The PASCO computer program to obtain the detailed dimensions of optimum stiffened composite structural panels is described. Design requirements in terms of inequality constraints can be placed on buckling loads or vibration frequencies, lamina stresses and strains, and overall panel stiffness for each of many load conditions. General panel cross sections can be treated. An analysis procedure involving a smeared orthotropic solution was investigated. The conservatism in the VIPASA solution and the danger in a smeared orthotropic solution is explored. PASCO's capability to design for thermal loadings is also described. It is emphasized that design studies illustrate the importance of the multiple load condition capability when thermal loads are present.

Buckling and vibration of periodic lattice structures

Lattice booms and platforms composed of flexible members or large diameter rings which may be stiffened by cables in order to support membrane-like antennas or reflector surfaces are the main components of some large space structures. The nature of these structures, repetitive geometry with few different members, makes possible relatively simple solutions for buckling and vibration of a certain class of these structures. Each member is represented by a stiffness matrix derived from the exact solution of the beam column equation. This transcendental matrix gives the current member stiffness at any end load or frequency. Using conventional finite element techniques, equilibrium equations can be written involving displacements and rotations of a typical node and its neighbors. The assumptions of a simple trigonometric mode shape is found to satisfy these equations exactly; thus the entire problem is governed by just one 6 x 6 matrix equation involving the amplitude of the displacement and rotation mode shapes. The boundary conditions implied by this solution are simple supported ends for the column type configurations.

Vibration of prestressed periodic lattice structures

Equations are developed for vibration of general lattice structures that have repetitive geometry. The method of solution is an extension of a previous paper for buckling of similar structures. The theory is based on representing each member of the structure with the exact dynamic stiffness matrix and taking advantage of the repetitive geometry to obtain an eigenvalue problem involving the degrees-of-freedom at a single node in the lattice. Results are given for shell-and beam-like lattice structures and for rings stiffened with tension cables and a central mast. The variation of frequency with external loading and the effect of local member vibration on overall modes is shown.

Deflections of beam columns on multiple supports

Lateral deflections of beam columns on multiple equally spaced supports are calculated using the STAGS nonlinear structural analysis computer program. Three lateral loadings are considered, uniform, linear, and uniform over only the center bay. Two types of boundary conditions are considered at the end supports, clamped, and simple support. The effect of an initial sinusoidal imperfection are considered. Deflections in the center and end bays of the beam columns are presented as a function of applied axial compressive load. As the number of bays becomes large, the effect of boundary conditions on the deflections in the center bays diminishes. For cases involving a uniform or linearly varying load, imperfections can have a much larger effect on deflections in the center bays than can lateral pressure.

Buckling of periodic structures

Equations are developed for the buckling of a general lattice structure that has repetitive geometry. Equilibrium at a typical node is expressed using finite element techniques, and the only assumption is that the response is periodic. By basing the stiffness matrix on the exact solution of the beam column equation, accurate results are obtained for complex buckling behavior that would require a very large system of equations using conventional techniques. The present method requires the eigenvalues of only a 6x6 determinant. The results are used to study the buckling of isogrid cylinders, three-element truss columns and polygonal rings. Details of the analysis including expressions for all terms in the governing stability determinant are given.
